HWS wins Navy Team Race to begin spring slate

3/4/2024 3:08:00 PM

The Hobart and William Smith sailing team opened the spring portion of its schedule with a pair of regattas this past weekend, March 2-3. HWS won the Navy Team Race and finished third at the DC Team Race.

NAVY TEAM RACE
  • In Annapolis, Maryland, HWS finished the weekend with a 12-3 overall record in first place.
  • On Saturday, sailors were met with heavy rain and an early morning breeze out of the east at 12 knots, which would shift throughout the day into a north westerly wind of eight knots. Two and a half round robins were completed in the rainy conditions.
  • On Sunday, difficult conditions continued into the morning, and races were postponed shortly as competitors waited for better wind conditions. With a delayed start, teams finished the third round robin before the regatta cut off time.
  • HWS had one more win than St. Mary's College of Maryland and Navy who finished tied for second. The Seahawks were awarded the tiebreaker with two wins when the tied teams met.
  • Round 1 saw HWS take a 4-1 lead, picking up wins over Princeton, St. Mary's Cornell and Fordham. Round 2 also saw HWS post a 4-1 record with wins over Navy, the Tigers, the Seahawks and the Big Red. HWS was 4-1 in Round 3. The team beat Navy, Princeton Cornell and Fordahm.
  • Thomas Walker Nico Garcia-Castrillon and Owen Harrod served as skippers with Ella Donaldson, Valyn Mogensen and Laura Therien competing as crew.

D.C. OPEN TEAM RACE
  • HWS was third in Washington D.C.. finishing with a 4-4 record.
  • Saturday was a cold and rainy day on the Potomac River. Two full Round Robins were competed in a NW wind of 5-14 knots. Sunday was a brilliant day but no wind did not allow for a third Round Robin to be completed.
  • HWS was 2-2 in the first Round Robin with wins over SUNY  Maritime and Pennsylvania. In the second Round Roin HWS was 2-2 with victories over Fordham and the Privateers.
  • Will Murray, Juan Carlos Lacerda Jones and Jeffrey Klempen served as skippers and Frances Depke, Rachel Duggan and Anna McBride competed as Crew.

UP NEXT
