GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith sailing team was in action this past weekend, March 30-31 when it hosted the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women's Fleet Race Championship on Seneca Lake. The Herons finished sixth overall.
Sailors arrived to cold and blustery conditions on Saturday with winds out of the northwest at 10-18 knots. Two races per division were sailed before the day warmed up and the breeze shut off. Racing resumed around 4 p.m. in a southwest wind. In total eight races were contested on Day 1 of the regatta. Sunday's racing started nicely with cold temperatures. In the middle of the day, the breeze decreased. After a short pause to reset the course, racing resumed. Six races were completed in each division on Day 2.
MAISA WOMEN'S FLEET RACE
- Senior Heather Kerns and first-year Stella Kim represented the Herons in A Division. They finished sixth with 66 points. Kerns and Kim put together a strong Sunday, finishing in the top three four times. Kerns and Kim won the final race. They were second twice on Sunday.
- Junior Elizabeth Starck and first-year Ella Donaldson sailed in B Division. They tied for seventh in B Division with Christopher Newport with 70 points. They crossed the line in the top 10 in eight races. Starck and Donaldson were third in the 10th race.
- Cornell won the regatta in dominating fashion, winning the regatta by 13 points. The Big Red were in the top 10 in 13 of the 20 races.
- Pennsylvania and Georgetown rounded out the podium.

The Hobart and William Smith sailing team will be back in the water next weekend, April 6-7, in Norfolk, Virginia, where they will compete for the Prosser Trophy. The Prosser Trophy is the MAISA Team Race Championship.
