The Hobart and William Smith sailing team collected a pair of sixth place finishes this past weekend. The Herons were in St. Mary's City, Maryland, for the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women's Team Race Championship. HWS also competed in the Truxtun Umsted in Throggs Neck, New York.

MAISA WOMEN'S TEAM RACE CHAMPIONSHIP
  • On Saturday morning sailors were met with testy conditions with gusts of winds blowing through over 30 knots from the NW. Only 16 races could be completed in the wild weather.
  • Sunday provided ideal weather for racing. A southerly breeze that reached highs of 15 knots allowed for tight competition across the board.
  • William Smith unphased by Saturday's tough conditions, posting a 4-0 record on Day 1. The Herons posted wins over Cornell, Georgetown, Old Dominion and St. Mary's Maryland to open the conference championship regatta. Sunday saw the Herons finish the opening round with a 4-3 record.
  • In Round 2, William Smith went 2-5 with wins over the Big Red and Navy. William Smith finished the weekend with a 6-8 overall record tied. The Herons were tied with the Seahawks but were awarded the head-to-head tiebreaker, number of points when tied teams met.
  • Cornell won the conference championship regatta, finishing with a 10-4 record.
  • Heather Kerns, Elizabeth Starck, and Brook Wood competed as skippers while Stella Kim, Maya Mahoney, Laura Therien, Ella Donaldson, and Bennett O'Keefe served as crew.

TRUXTUN UMSTED
  • Saturday's weather was too dangerous to race in, and after multiple delays, races were completely abandoned for the day.
  • Sunday's conditions were far better with a WSW breeze at 10-12 knots starting off the day. Gusts of southerly wind picked up throughout the day, but each division was able to complete 10 races.
  • HWS finished tied for fifth with Old Dominion with 147 points on the weekend. The Monarchs were awarded fifth thanks to the head-to-head tiebreaker.
  • Nick Sessions raced as the skipper and Frances Depke served as crew for the team's boat in the A Division. They finished eighth in the A Division with 80 points. They were in the top 10 in all but three races.
  • In B Division, Juan Carlos Lacerda Jones and Jeffrey Klempen competed as skippers while Rachel Duggan and Elijah Goldman raced as crew. They finished with 67 points, placing them seventh in the B Division.
  • Fordham University took home first place by a wide margin, finishing with 85 points. Lacerda Jones and Duggan won the second race.
