HWS 8th at America Trophy

This past weekend the Hobart and William Smith sailing team competed for the America Trophy in Throggs Neck, New York, finishing eighth out of 18 teams. The America Trophy serves as the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Championship regatta.

The America Trophy
  • Saturday began with an early postponement due too a lack of wind, but by the afternoon the conditions were good, and the races went smoothly. After Day 1 six races had been contested in each division.
  • Sunday brought much more consistent conditions that allowed for a full day of racing. Nine more races were contested in each Division.
  • HWS finished with 242 points. In B Division, HWS was fifth with 101 points. The A Division crew was 11th with 141 points.
  • In the B Division, Juan Carlos Lacerda Jones served as the skipper while Rachel Duggan and Robert Breslin raced as crew. They were in the top 10 in 14 of the 15 races, including two victories.
  • In the A Division, Will Murray and Jeffrey Klempen sailed as skippers while Frances Depke competed as crew. Murray sailed in races 1-12 and had two second place finishes and one win. Klempen competed in the final three races, finishing eighth in the final race of the weekend.

The Hobart and William Smith sailing team will be back on the water next week, April 27-28, in Kings Point for the Admiral's Cup.
