TROY, N.Y.—Sophomore third baseman
Nate Garrett homered in both games of a doubleheader for Hobart, but Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute swept the Statesmen in the Liberty League Crossover Series this afternoon. The Engineers controlled the opener, prevailing 6-1, and rallied to claim Game 2, 5-4.
Garrett hit a solo shot in the eighth inning of the first game and launched a three-run home run in the fourth inning of the second game to give Hobart a 3-1 lead. Sophomore second baseman
Christian Petry was 3-for-6 on the day. He has reached base safely in 39 consecutive games.
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME 1
- Sophomore Teck Nash got the start in Game 1. In six innings, he allowed 10 hits, struck out three, walked one and allowed four runs (three earned).
- First-year Charlie Forrest came on to pitch the final two innings, striking out four, while allowing two hits, two runs (one earned), with two walks.
- Garrett was the only Statesman to reach third base during the game, touching it on his first round-tripper of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME 2
- Hobart turned to Griffin Snyder to extend the series to a third game on Sunday. He gave the Statesmen 5 2-3 innings, scattering five hits, allowing just one run (a solo home run in the second) and striking out three.
- Snyder left in line to get the win thanks to Garrett's second home run. Sean Garvin and Drew Bolduc drew walks to set the table for Garrett.
- Sophomore Max Friedlander worked into and out of trouble in the sixth, loading the bases before striking out Joey Saia to end the inning.
- With one out and the bases loaded in the seventh, Friedlander walked in a run and then the Engineers got a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game.
- RPI took the lead against junior Nicholas Franceschi whose wild pitch allowed the go-ahead run to score.
- In the eighth, Hobart loaded the bases on what could have been an inning ending double play. Garrett hit a grounder to third. The throw to second to start the around the horn twin killing, but the throw to second pulled the second baseman off the bag and his throw to first was late.
- The Statesmen tied the game when Jack Byrnes was hit by a pitch.
- Saia hit what proved to be the game-winning home run in the bottom of the inning, clearing the left centerfield wall.
- Petry singled to lead off the ninth, senior Ty Gallagher walked and sophomore Will Jones was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out.
- RPI reliever Cameron Heuer worked out of the jam, striking out the next batter and then inducing a game-ending double play.
FOR THE RECORD
- Hobart ended the season with a 17-19 overall record.
- The Engineers improved to 20-12.
