#36 Statesmen fall to Brewers in Liberty League semifinals

ITHACA, N.Y.– The No. 36 ranked Hobart tennis team fell to No. 47 Vassar 5-4 in the Liberty League semifinal match this afternoon at Reis Tennis Center. The Statesmen conclude their season with a 14-6 overall record, while the Brewers move to 14-5 overall and advance to the Liberty League championship match tomorrow against RPI.

Hobart jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play, winning in the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. In the No. 1 spot, senior Sean Pesin and sophomore Nick Fischer defeated Fernando Beauermeister and Eugene Lee 8-3 for their second straight win. The duo concludes the season with a 14-5 record in dual match doubles play.

In the No. 3 spot, senior Winter Fagerberg and junior Rahul Vallabhajosula were forced into a tiebreaker but ultimately came out victorious over Pedro Cattaruzzi and Jay Wong. The Statesmen duo won 8-7 (7-3) to move to 11-3 on the season.

The Brewers stormed back in singles play, winning four of the six matches over the Statesmen. Vassar won three straight to grab a 4-2 lead, but Hobart wasn't done yet and fought back to tie the match at 4-4. Pesin won his second match of the day as he defeated Wong 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 1 spot. Pesin finished the season with a 10-7 record in the No. 1 spot.

Fischer also won his second match of the day as he defeated Benjamin Almquist 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 in the No. 2 spot. He finished the season on a two-match win streak and with a 10-8 record in dual matches.

The match came down to the No. 5 spot, where Fagerberg took on Vassar's Nolan Kubiak. Despite winning the first set, Fagerberg fell 7-5, 2-6, 0-6 to Kubiak, resulting in a 5-4 win for the Brewers. Fagerberg concluded his senior season with an 11-7 record in dual matches, including a 10-1 record in the No. 5 spot.
