William Smith senior
Marjorie Plants scored twice in the first half as the 20th-ranked William Smith soccer team raced past Plattsburgh 8-0 in the opening game of the We are the Future Invitational on Cozzens Field this afternoon. It was the second time in the last three years that the Herons scored eight goals in a season opener.

Jordan Harpster both played in goal and combined for three saves.
Lauren Haley played all 90 minutes in goal for Plattsburgh and made six saves.
KEY STATS:
- William Smith dominated the stat sheet. The Herons finished the game with a 24-5 advantage in shots, including a 13-3 edge in shots on goal.
- The Herons also held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
MATCH SUMMARY:
- William Smith opened the scoring in the second minute when Plants collected a bouncing ball, stepped around a defender and fired a shot from 23 yards out into the lower right-hand corner of the cage.
- The Herons doubled their lead in the 12th minute when a Plattsburgh defender headed a free kick into her own goal.
- Plants added her second goal of the day in the 19th minute. Off of a corner kick, she swept a bouncing ball across the goal line. Hotaling had an assist on the goal.
- In the 24th minute, junior Julia Accioly made it 4-0, scoring her first collegiate goal. She ran onto a through ball from Metzler and slipped a shot past a diving Lauren Haley.
- In the 51st minute, Accioly returned the favor to Metzler. Accioly left a short pass for Metzler who buried a left-footed shot into the lower right corner of the cage.
- Seven Minutes later, sophomore Kaleigh Darby got in on the action when she looped a shot from the top of the 18-yard box past Haley and into the upper right corner of the cage. Her first career goal was assisted by Hotaling.
- Sophomores Charlotte Brown and Izzy Thors added their first collegiate goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Brown converted a penalty kick and Thors slipped home a pass from Brown.

William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, August 31, when it takes on Washington and Lee University. The game is scheduled to begin at Noon on Cozzens Field.
