Herons open season with dominant sweep of Lakers

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep of SUNY Oswego in its season opener this evening in Bristol Gymnasium. The Herons move to 1-0 on the season, while the visiting Lakers fall to 0-1 heading into day two of the William Smith Tournament.

William Smith put on a dominant performance combining for 48 kills as a team compared to Oswego's 20. The Herons hit .291 as a team in the sweep and held the Lakers to a .060 hitting percentage.

Junior Marin Montagne led the way for William Smith with 15 kills, hitting .250 from the pin. She added seven digs, one assist and one solo block in the win. Classmates Malya Sayre (.238) and Hope Von Dohlen chipped in ten kills each to lead the Herons past the Lakers. Sayre added 12 digs for her first double-double of the season.
  
MATCH MOMENTS:

  • The Herons came out firing in the opening set, combining for 19 kills as a team on a .341 hitting percentage. William Smith held Oswego to a match-low six kills (.062) in the opening set to grab the early momentum. Montagne exploded in set one, putting down seven kills (.312) on 16 swings to lead the Herons to a dominating 25-14 win to open the match.
  • Oswego fought back in the second but were matched by a steady William Smith side that continued on its efficient attack efforts. The Herons found five kills from Montagne and three kills from Von Dohlen, Sayre, and junior Jaylynn McCarthy in the second to lift them to a 25-23 win in set two.
  • Sayre caught the hot hand in the final set and led William Smith with five kills on eight swings. The Herons continued their momentum with big swings from both pins to finish off the match on top 3-0.

MATCH STATS:

  • Montagne led the Herons with 15 kills (.250), followed by Sayre (.238) and Von Dohlen (.286) with ten each. McCarthy chipped in eight kills (.375) in the sweep.
  • First-year setter Delainy Williams put on a show in her collegiate debut, tallying a match-high 34 assists and three kills (.600). She added three service aces and three digs in the win.
  • First-year libero Kali Vanderhoof also put on a stellar performance in her collegiate debut, leading the Herons' defense with 16 digs. Sayre added 12 digs in the win while Montagne chipped in seven.
  • William Smith combined for four blocks in the win, while only being blocked once. McCarthy, Von Dohlen, Montagne and first-year Arielle Newsome led the Herons at the net with one each.

COACHES CORNER:

"Tonight was a great start to the season for us!" said Head Coach Derryk Williams. "We had contributions from all across the court and I am really happy with how we played. Our mental recovery was really strong, and I am proud of how we stepped up in the third set. Two more matches tomorrow that we have to come ready for, but we're really excited about how we started."

William Smith will be back in action tomorrow when it hosts day two of the William Smith Tournament. The Herons host Clark at 1 p.m. and Geneseo at 6 p.m. in Bristol Gymnasium to conclude opening weekend
