Second half surge sends Herons past Knights 2-0

GENESEO, N.Y.—The William Smith soccer team scored two goals in the second half as it defeated Geneseo 2-0 in a non-conference contest at College Stadium this afternoon. With their second consecutive shutout, the Herons are now 3-2-1 overall.
 
Senior Marjorie Plants and sophomore Izzy Thors scored in the victory for William Smith. Graduate student Kirsten Nelson played all 90 minutes in goal. She made a season-high eight saves.
 
Mollie Collins started in goal for the Knights (3-2-1). She made five saves.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Plants opened the scoring in the 64th minute. She fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that snuck under the crossbar. It was her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
  • Just over three minutes later, Thors notched her second goal of the year. She chipped a shot from near the penalty spot past Collins.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • Plants nearly opened the scoring in the eighth minute, but her shot was smothered by Collins.
  • At the opposite end of the field, Carly Chupick had a shot stopped by Nelson.
  • While a majority of the second half was played in William Smith's attacking end of the field, the Knights had their chances to break up the shutout bid in the closing stages of regulation.
  • In the 84th minute, Abby Foster's shot that was ticketed for the bottom right corner was saved by Nelson.
  • Lindsey Matthews and Juliette Frischmann also had scoring opportunities turned aside by Nelson.

  • William Smith finished the game with a 15-9 advantage in shots.
  • The Herons had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
