Herons host #11 Cortland Saturday

The William Smith field hockey team will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 21, as it continues its six-game homestand against No. 11 SUNY Cortland. Action between the Herons and the Red Dragons is set for 1 p.m., on McCooey Field.

Fans who can't make it to McCooey Field can follow all the action with HWS All-Access Video and Live Stats. The game will be broadcast on WHWS-FM (105.7 in Geneva).

ABOUT THE HERONS:

  • William Smith enters the weekend with a 3-3 overall record and is coming off a 2-1 loss to Lebanon Valley on Sunday. The Herons went 2-1 last week, defeating Nazareth 6-1 and Kean 3-0 before falling to the Flying Dutchmen.
  • First-year Caroline Kogut was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week for the second time this season after notching a goal in three straight games for William Smith. Junior Lily Gutch was named to the weekly honor roll after scoring twice in the win over the Cougars.
  • Kogut leads the team with nine points on four goals and one assist. Gutch follows close behind with six points on three goals, while senior Rebecca Mantione has tallied five points on one goal and three assists.
  • First-year Baker Jeremiah has the edge in goalie minutes played for the Herons. She is 3-3 this season with a 1.57 goals against average and a .667 save percentage.

ABOUT THE RED DRAGONS:

  • Cortland brings a perfect 6-0 record to Geneva on Saturday and is ranked No. 11 in this week's NFHCA poll.
  • The Red Dragons are coming off an 8-0 win over Ramapo on Wednesday.
  • Cortland has three players with 10 or more points this season. Kierra Ettere leads the team with 19 points on nine goals and one assist, while Gianna Trunfio has recorded 13 points on four goals and five assists. Hannah Corrigan has tallied 10 points on four goals and two assists.
  • Emma Morgan has the edge in minutes played in goal for the Red Dragons. She is 6-0 with a 0.87 GAA and a .773 save percentage.

SERIES SNAPSHOT:

  • Saturday's game will be 59th meeting between the Herons and the Red Dragons. Cortland holds a 36-22 edge in the series, but William Smith holds a 14-13 advantage in Geneva.
  • The Red Dragons won the most recent meeting 2-1 in overtime in Cortland last season. Sophomore Leah Griffith scored her first career goal for William Smith in the loss.
