HWS 3rd at MAISA Top Nine Open

The Hobart and William Smith sailing team was back in action competing in three regattas this weekend, Sept. 21-22. HWS was in Ithaca, New York, for two Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association regattas and New York City for the Jesuit Invitational.
 
HWS finished third out of nine teams in the MAISA Top Nine Open hosted by Cornell and third of six teams at the Jesuit Invitational hosted by Fordham. William Smith finished fourth out of nine teams at the MAISA Top Nine Women's Regatta in Ithaca.
 
MAISA Top 9 Open
  • With only nine entries, A and B Divisions were sailed as one combined regatta.
  • Juan Carlos Lacerda Jones and Jeffrey Klempen served as skippers for the races. Frances Depke and Rachel Duggan acted as crew.
  • HWS finished with a total of 286 points.
  • Klempen and Duggan placed fifth with 126 points. They had 11 top 10 finishes.
  • Lacerda Jones and Depke finished 10th with 160 points.
 
Jesuit Invitational
  • The regatta was broken into A, B and C Divisions, but sailed as one combined regatta with only six teams entered.
  • The B division team led the way for HWS, finishing with a total of 87 points. The team was made up of James Kopack and Maya Mahoney. They won the ninth race and were in the top 10 in all but three races.
  • Nico Garcia-Castrillon, and Kenelm Guinness also served as skippers with Reilly Roedel, and Margaret Torrey competing as crew.
  • Guiness and Torrey contributed 132 points, and had top-10 finishes in all but four races.
  • Garcia-Castrillon and Roedel finished with a total of 149 points.
  • The three Division combined for 368 points
  • University of Pennsylvania won the regatta with 112 points, 243 points ahead of second place. The Quakers did not post a finish higher than eighth in the 14 races completed.
 
MAISA Top 9 Women's Regatta
  • With only nine entries, A and B Divisions were sailed as one combined regatta.
  • The Herons finished fourth of nine teams, with a total of 326 points.
  • The A division team was comprised of Elizabeth Starck and Sabrina Starck as skippers, with Ella Donaldson and Lucy Lack serving as crew. They led the way for the Herons with a total 138 points, finishing sixth.
  • The B division team had skippers Brook Wood and Deana Fedulova, with Lack and Olivia Wilkens as crew. The team finished with 188 points.
Up Next
Sailing is back in action next weekend, Sept. 28-29. Four Hobart sailors will head to Annapolis, Maryland, to compete for the Carl Van Duyne Trophy, the MAISA men's single-handed championship. The team will also head to Throggs Neck to compete in the New York Maritime Open. The Herons head to Providence, Rhode Island to race  in the Brown Women's ACC Eliminations.
