9/3/2024 4:08:00 PM

First-year Caroline Kogut of the No. 24 ranked William Smith field hockey team was recognized by the Liberty League as the conference's Rookie of the Week after a strong collegiate debut in the Herons' 4-0 win over St. John Fisher. Junior Lily Gutch was named to the weekly honor roll for her contributions in the win.

Kogut was one of two first-years to start in Friday's season-opening win and made a strong impression in her first game as a Heron. She led the team with one goal on five shots against the Cardinals. Kogut's goal in the fourth quarter opened the flood gates for William Smith who scored three goals in the final 15 minutes.

Kogut anchored the backline for the Herons as they put on a dominant performance, outshooting St. John Fisher 24-2. William Smith also enjoyed a 12-1 edge in penalty corners, leading it to it's first clean sheet of the season.

Gutch was named to the weekly honor roll after scoring one goal in the Herons' win over the Cardinals. She fired off three shots against Fisher, landing all three shots on target. Gutch now sits at eight career points on three goals and two assists.

William Smith (1-0) will be back in action Wednesday, Sept. 4, when it heads to Geneseo to take on SUNY Geneseo (2-0) in a midweek nonconference matchup. The Herons are set to take on the Knights at 7 p.m. at College Stadium.
