Bears slip past Herons

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith field hockey was edged by Ursinus 3-0 in a non-conference contest on McCooey Field this afternoon. The Herons fall to 1-2 on the season while the Bears improve to 2-0.
 
First-year Baker Jeremiah played all 60 minutes in goal for William Smith. She made two saves.
 
Mary Lauren Franz recorded a hat trick for Ursinus. Adriana Palldinetti started in goal and made one save. Susie Miller played the fourth quarter.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • Franz opened the scoring just under three minutes into the game. She redirected a crossing pass from Kristen Johnson and slipped a shot past Jeremiah for her third goal of the season.
  • Franz doubled the Bears' lead in the 23rd minute. She collected her own rebound in front of the cage and fired a shot into back of the cage.
  • Franz completed the hat trick with 11 seconds remaining in the third quarter. She collected a pass from Ava Mikulski, spun and ripped a shot past Jeremiah.
  • In the 24th minute, William Smith nearly broke up the shutout, but a Caroline Kogut shot was swiped off the line by Maeve Montgomery. Just under a minute later, Kogut had a shot from the top of the arc turned aside by Palldinetti.
  • In the 54th minute, Lily Gutch had a shot just miss the left goal post.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ursinus finished the game with an 11-4 advantage in shots.
  • Both teams had two penalty corners.
 
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will continue its six-game homestand on Tuesday, Sept. 10, when they welcome Nazareth to McCooey Field. The non-conference contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
