McCulley scores game-high 22 against Tigers

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith sophomore Amelia McCulley scored a game-high 22 points, but visiting RIT escaped Bristol Gym with a 63-55 Liberty League win over the Herons. It was McCulley's second straight and third 20-point game this season.
 
McCulley shot 8-of-11 from the floor with five 3-pointers. She also grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots. First-year Anne Keneally added 12 points off the bench, connecting on 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Giana Lobozzo added seven points and a game-high six assists.
 
RIT put three players in double figures led by Faye Kaplinski's 15 points. Caroline Henderson contributed 14 points and five assists, while Maddy Ramsgard posted a double-double on 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams played the first quarter to a draw.
  • In the second quarter, McCulley rattled off nine straight points to turn a 3-point deficit into a 27-21 lead.
  • RIT managed to retake the lead 31-30 on a layup by Faye Kaplinski with under three minutes left in the half.
  • Sophomore Ava Lobozzo connected on a pull up jumper with about a minute to go and Keneally nailed a 3-pointer just ahead of the buzzer to send William Smith into the halftime with a 35-31 lead.
  • McCulley led all scorers with 14 points at the break.
  • The third quarter proved to be pivotal as the Tigers surged into the lead by outscoring the Herons 21-9. RIT used 10 straight points in the latter stages of the quarter to build a 9-point cushion.
  • William Smith didn't quit, cutting the visitors lead to six with just over a minute left, but the Tigers scored the game's final two points at the free throw line to clinch the win.
 
ON THE HORIZON
  • William Smith (1-10, 1-3) will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 11, when the Herons host Ithaca (3-7, 2-1). The opening tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
  • RIT (5-5, 3-0) also plays Saturday at 2 p.m., visiting RPI (8-3, 2-2).
