Quirk, Murray lead Herons past Vikings 4-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—Sophomore forward Colleen Quirk scored twice and senior goalie Erin Murray made 14 saves as the William Smith hockey team defeated Salem State 4-0 in a New England Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler this evening.
 
Quirk added an assist as she matched her career-high with three points. Graduate student Mackenzie O'Neil (1g, 1a) and first-year Bella Hacker (2a) also had multi-point games. The shutout was Murray's third of the season.
 
Cassandra Valentine started in goal for the Vikings and made 14 saves. Delaney Cox played the final 32 minutes and stopped 11 shots.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • With the win, the Herons are 4-8-1 overall this season, including a 4-3-0 mark in NEHC play. The victory snapped a six-game winless streak.
  • The Vikings fall to 4-10-0 overall and 0-7-0 in conference play.
 
KEY STATS
  • William Smith finished the game with a 29-14 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Herons were 2-for-4 on the power play and Salem State was 0-for-2 with the extra attacker.

GAME SUMMARY
  • William Smith dominated the opening period, but the Herons could not solve Valentine. William Smith finished the frame with a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Quirk broke the deadlock at the 3:05 mark of the second period. She picked up a rebound and stuffed a shot past Valentine for her first goal of the season. Hacker and first-year Abigail Schum were awarded assists on the goal.
  • Two minutes later, first-year Rowan Kennedy wristed a shot from the slot past Valentine. Her second goal of the season was assisted by O'Neil
  • Quirk gave William Smith a 3-0 lead at the 7:59 mark of the second period. Standing in the slot, she redirected a Tara Valas shot past the Salem State goalie. Senior Kayla Ketchabaw also had an assist on the power-play goal.
  • O'Neil rounded out the scoring at the 13:58 mark of the third period. She collected a rebound in the slot and wired a shot past Cox for her second goal of the season. Quirk and Hacker had assists on the power-play goal.
 
CLIMBING THE LADDER
  • With today's win, Murray now has 16 career victories, third on William Smith's career list.
  • It was Murray's eighth career shutout. That number is also third on the Herons' career list.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith and Salem State will conclude the season series tomorrow, Jan. 11, at 4 p.m. It will conclude a three-game homestand for the Herons.
