Game Recap: Hobart Basketball | | Ken DeBolt

Statesmen comeback falls short against Raptors

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Hobart basketball team trailed Bard by as many as 15 points, but staged a furious comeback to take the lead with 8.2 seconds remaining only to see the Raptors score a last-second basket for a 70-69 Liberty League win.

First-year Monty Nedd led the Statesmen, scoring all of his season-high 16 points in the second half. Sophomore Alex Moesch posted all 13 of his points in the first half. Senior Pat Healy also hit double digits, scoring 10 points for Hobart. Sophomore Dorian Paki contributed six points, a team-high eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

Bard had four players hit double figures led by Rowan Heinze's 16 points. Sean Wilcox added 14 points and a team-high eight boards. Azriel Almodovar and Lazaros Panagiotounis chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively, off the bench.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bard took a 34-30 lead into halftime. The Raptors came out of the break and scored the first seven points and 14 of the first 17 to build a 48-33 lead.
  • Hobart still trailed by 10 with under seven minutes left in the game.
  • A 7-2 Statesmen scoring burst made it a five-point game with five minutes left.
  • Down six with about a minute and a half to go, the Statesmen got back-to-back buckets by Nedd and senior Hunter Meshanic to make it a 67-65 game.
  • Bard sank one of two free throws at the 50-second mark, but Nedd converted a driving layup to make it a one-point game.
  • At the other end of the floor, Hobart got a stop when Healy blocked Almodovar's layup attempt and Moesch secured the rebound.
  • With 8.2 seconds left, Bard fouled Nedd, who immediately made the first before the home team attempted to ice him by calling a timeout.
  • It didn't work. He made the second for a 69-68 lead.
  • The Raptors pushed the ball up court quickly with Heinze scoring the winning layup.
