Walsh drops season-high 14 points against Clarkson

GENEVA, N.Y.— The Clarkson women's basketball team used a big fourth quarter to slip away with an 81-72 conference win over William Smith this afternoon in Bristol Gymnasium.

Senior Molly Walsh led the Herons with a season-high 14 points this afternoon. She added three rebounds, two assists and one steal in the loss for William Smith. Sophomore Giana Lobozzo chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds, a season-high six assists, and three steals, while first-year Anne Keneally added 10 points and two rebounds off the bench.

Clarkson was led by Bella Doyle and Fallon Griffin with 18 points each. The duo combined for 10 assists, nine rebounds, three steals and a block in the win. Raelin Burns chipped in 17 points, five rebounds and four steals for the Golden Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Herons came out hot in the opening quarter, shooting 59% from the floor including 86% from behind the arc to open the game. Walsh went 3-for-3 from behind the arc as William Smith extended its lead to as much as nine in the opening quarter. The sharp shooting helped the Herons to a 27-20 lead after 10 minutes of play.
  • Clarkson responded well in the second, shooting 64% from the floor. Fallon Griffin found the hot hand in the second quarter as she went 4-of-6 from behind the arc, including a half court buzzer beater to bring the Golden Knights within one heading into halftime.
  • William Smith regained the momentum in the third, finding nine points from its bench to help spark the offense. Keneally came off the bench and combined for eight points in the quarter to keep the Herons up by four heading into the final 10 minutes.
  • The Golden Knights fought back in the fourth and found crucial points from Doyle and Burns to regain the lead with seven minutes remaining. The duo combined for 16 points and held William Smith to a game-low shooting percentage to close out the conference battle on top. The come-from-behind victory snapped Clarkson's four-game losing streak this season.

William Smith will be back in action Friday, Jan. 31, when it travels to Ithaca for a Liberty League matchup. Action between the Herons and the Bombers is set for 5:30 p.m. in Ben Light Gymnasium.
