Herons host 2 conference foes this weekend

The William Smith basketball team will conclude its three-game homestand this weekend as it hosts two conference matches against RIT and Ithaca. The Herons will take on the Tigers on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and will close out the weekend with a Liberty League showdown with the Bombers on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Fans who can't make it to Geneva can follow the games with HWS All-Access Video and Live Stats. The games will also be broadcast on WHWS-FM (105.7 in Geneva).

ABOUT THE HERONS: (1-9, 1-2 LL)

  • William Smith is coming off its first win of the season and the first win of the Head Coach Seraphine Hamilton '06 era as it defeated RPI 54-48 on Saturday.
  • Sophomore Amelia McCulley was named to the Liberty League Weekly Honor Roll after averaging 13.0 ppg and 5.0 rebounds per rpg over the Engineers.
  • McCulley leads the team and ranks fifth in the Liberty League in scoring, averaging 13.1 ppg. She is followed by classmate Giana Lobozzo who ranks 23rd in the conference, averaging 8.6 ppg.
  • First-year Jojo Sulmasy grabs a team-leading 4.7 rpg. She is followed by sophomore Ava Lobozzo with 4.6 rpg and McCulley with 4.4 rpg.
  • McCulley also leads the Liberty League in blocked shots, averaging 1.9 per game. She ranks sixth in the conference in free throw percentage (.765) and eighth in 3-pointers per game (1.5).
  • Senior Molly Walsh dishes out 2.1 assists per game which ranks 19th in the conference.
  • On the defensive end, Giana Lobozzo leads the conference in steals, averaging 2.4 per game. Ava Lobozzo and McCulley are tied for 15th in the conference in that category, averaging 1.3 spg.  

ABOUT THE TIGERS: (4-5, 2-0 LL)

  • RIT is coming off a 70-46 loss to Rochester on Tuesday.
  • Caroline Henderson leads the team in scoring at 14.7 ppg. She is followed by Maddy Ramsgard who averages 12.9 ppg.
  • Ramsgard leads the team in rebounding, averaging 6.4 rpg. Ben Kayser-Cochran and Faye Kaplinski follow close behind with 5.4 rpg each.
  • Ramsgard also leads the team in assists and steals, averaging 3.2 apg and 1.4 spg. Kayser-Cochran chips in 0.7 blocks per game.

ABOUT THE BOMBERS: (3-6, 2-0 LL)

  • Ithaca is coming off a 69-64 loss to Trinity (Conn.) on Friday and is currently on a three-game losing streak.
  • Annabella Yorio leads the Bombers in scoring, averaging 10.9 ppg. She is followed by Emma Waite and Elizabeth Majka with 9.2 and 9.1 ppg, respectively.
  • Anya Watkins ranks second in the Liberty League in rebounding as she averages 9.9 rpg. She is followed by Yorio who averages 6.0 rpg.
  • Waite averages a team-leading 3.4 apg, while June Dickson forces a team-leading 1.2 spg. Yorio chips in 1.0 bpg for Ithaca.

SERIES SNAPSHOT:

  • This will be the 47th matchup between William Smith and RIT. The Herons lead the series 31-15, including a 15-8 edge in Geneva.
  • RIT swept the series last season against William Smith, including a 71-60 decision in Geneva. McCulley led the Herons with 11 points, three rebounds and three steals, while Walsh chipped in 10 points and three assists in the loss.
  • Saturday's game will be the 56th meeting between William Smith and Ithaca. The Bombers hold a 32-23 advantage in the series, but the Herons hold a 14-13 edge in Geneva.
  • Ithaca swept the series last season against William Smith, including a 78-56 decision in Geneva. Walsh recorded 10 points, five rebounds and two assists in the loss.
