POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—The William Smith volleyball team defeated Vassar 3-1 in a Liberty League Contest in Kenyon Hall this afternoon. Three different Herons hit double digits in kills as they improved 16-2 overall on the season. The Brewers fall to 13-5 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League.
William Smith combined for 52 kills in the match while hitting .283. The Herons had 16 service aces, eight blocks and 52 digs. Vassar had 36 kills (.115), added six aces, three blocks and 50 digs in the match.
Senior
Malya Sayre led the way for William Smith. She recorded 21 kills while hitting .333. She added nine digs, four blocks and an ace in four sets. Classmate
Hope Von Dohlen had 10 kills (.316) and had two digs. Sophomore
Emily Fulton recorded 12 kills (.294) and had a team-high four aces and 14 digs.
Maura McAusland led the way for Vassar. She had 17 kills while hitting .302 and had six digs. Rebecca Gutierrez hit .556, recording five kills in nine swings.
MATCH MOMENTS
- The Herons came out on fire and took the first set 25-14. William Smith used a 9-1 run in the middle of the set to pull away from the Brewers. The Herons had 14 kills in the opening set, hitting .313. They limited Vassar to seven kills (.120) in the first set.
- William Smith won the second set 25-16. They had 13 kills and hit a match-high .522. Vassar had eight kills (.174). The Herons closed out set two with a 5-1 run. Sayre had seven kills in the second set.
- Vassar took the third set 25-22. They had 13 kills (.182). William Smith recorded 14 kills in set three.
- The Herons closed out the match with a 25-14 win in the fourth set. William Smith had 11 kills (.226). The Herons limited Vassar to eight kills (-.033) in the final set. William Smith closed out the match with a 5-0 run.
MATCH STATS
- Sayre paced the Herons with 21 kills (.333), while Fulton had 12 (.294) and Von Dohlen had 10. Senior Jaylynn McCarthy and sophomore Delainy Williams added two kills each.
- Williams recorded a season-high 48 assists in the win. Sophomore Kali Vanderhoof had two assists while seniors Cydney Fernandez and Marin Montagne added one assist each.
- The Herons combined for 52 digs. Fulton led the way with 14 digs. Vanderhoof and Sayre had 12 and 11 digs, respectively. Five players recorded a dig in the victory.
- The Herons recorded 16 aces for the second straight match. Montagne led the way at the service line, posting a match-high six aces. Fulton had four and Williams and Fernandez recorded two.
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 15, when it concludes a five-game road trip. The Herons will head to Rochester to take on Nazareth. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
