Herons open conference play this weekend

The William Smith field hockey team will be back in action this weekend as it opens up Liberty League play with two conference games. The Herons will host St. Lawrence at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, before traveling to Saratoga Springs, New York, for a match at Skidmore on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Fans who can't make it to McCooey Field this Friday can follow all the action with HWS All-Access Video and Live Stats. The game will be broadcast on WHWS-FM (105.7 in Geneva).

ABOUT THE HERONS:
  • William Smith enters the weekend with a 5-5 overall record and is coming off a 4-1 loss to non-conference foe, Messiah on Saturday.
  • Graduate student Rebecca Mantione leads the Herons with 15 points on six goals and three assists. Sophomore Caroline Kogut follows with 10 points on four goals and two assists. Sophomore Madison Campisi adds six points on three goals for William Smith.
  • Sophomore Baker Jeremiah and first-year Olivia Terranova have split the minutes in goal for William Smith this season. Jeremiah is 3-2 with a 3.05 goals against average and a .640 save percentage, while Terranova is 2-3 with a 2.01 GAA and a .719 save percentage.
ABOUT THE SAINTS:
  • St. Lawrence comes into the weekend with a 3-4 overall record with a 0-1 mark in conference play.
  • Caroline Hamilton leads the Saints with 11 points on four goals and three assists. Mayson Blondek and Lily Gubbins follows with seven points each.
  • Elizabeth Walsh has played a majority of minutes in goal for St. Lawrence and is 2-4 on the season. She has recorded a 1.92 GAA and an .829 save percentage.
ABOUT THE THOROUGHBREDS:
  • Skidmore enters the weekend with a 5-5 overall record.
  • Mia Angwin leads the Thoroughbreds with 13 points on four goals and five assists. Ella Costa is second in points with 12 off of three goals and six assists. Erin Ohlenbusch follows with 9 points on three goals and three assists.
  • Nicole Sylvestri has played a majority of minutes in goal for Skidmore and is 3-4 on the season. She has recorded a 1.44 GAA and an .800 save percentage. Allison Morgan adds a 2-1 record in goal for the Thoroughbreds with a 3.22 GAA and a .591 save percentage.  
SERIES HISTORY:
  • Friday will be the 59th meeting between the Herons and the Saints. William Smith holds a 38-20 advantage in the series, including a 20-11 edge in Geneva.
  • Last season on Oct. 20, 2024, the Herons defeated the Saints 4-3 in Canton.
  • Sunday will be the 41st meeting between William Smith and Skidmore. The series is tied 20-20 with the Thoroughbreds holding a 13-7 edge in Saratoga Springs. Last season, Skidmore defeated William Smith 1-0 both in the regular season and in the Liberty League Tournament quarterfinals.
