GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart football team, led by a potent passing attack, overpowered St. Lawrence 49-17 on Boswell Field at Urick Stadium this afternoon. The Statesmen threw for a season-high 346 yards on the way to 544 yards of total offense, earning their 14th consecutive win over the Saints.
The Saints scored the game's first touchdown early in the first quarter, but Hobart responded with 35-straight points to carry a commanding 35-7 lead into halftime.
HISTORIC EFFORTS
- Hobart's 544 yards of offense are tied for seventh most in program history. It's the most yards by the Statesmen since they put up 544 yards in a 56-27 win over Rochester in 2016.
- Hobart's 346 passing yards is eighth on the program's single game list.
- Sophomore quarterback Jeremy Weiss was 13-of-17 passing for 329 yards and four touchdowns. It's the most passing yards by a Statesman since Ryan Hofmann threw for 380 yards in a 20-17 win over Rowan in 2019.
- Sophomore wide receiver Jordan Nolan caught three passes for a game-high 154 yards (19th most receiving yards in Hobart history) and two touchdowns. It was the most receiving yards by a Statesman since Jake Catalioto caught seven passes for 168 yards in a 56-48 win at Shenandoah in 2018.
- Nolan's 51.3 yards per catch average is the second highest in Hobart history. Andy Pirozzolo set the record with three catches for 173 yards (57.7) in a 48-21 win over Rochester in 1999.
- Weiss and Nolan teamed up for the longest pass play in Hobart history, a 96-yard touchdown pass that gave the Statesmen a 28-7 lead with just over two minutes left in the first half.
ON THE RUN
- Hobart also ran the ball effectively, averaging 4.6 yards per carry on the way to a final total of 198 yards.
- Junior running back E.J. Taylor led the way with 103 yards and two touchdowns. It was his fifth 100-yard game of the season and 14th of his career.
- Taylor moved into 11th place Hobart's career rushing touchdowns list with 24. Breaking a tie with Jerry Hanley and passing David Ralph.
- Taylor also moved up to 13th on the career rushing yards list with 2,194, passing Jack Holleran.
OVERSHADOWED SHUTDOWN
- Perhaps overshadowed by the offensive fireworks, Hobart's defense turned a dominant effort as well.
- The Saints came into the game with the Liberty League's No. 2 passing attack, averaging 206.3 yards per game. The Statesmen limited quarterback Will Lederman to just 118 yards passing.
- First-year linebacker Jeron Atwater Jr. made a game-high eight tackles, 1.5 for loss, 0.5 sacks and a pass breakup.
- Sophomore defensive lineman Billy Brosko added six tackles, including three for loss, a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.
- Hobart's defense limited the visitors to just a single fourth quarter field goal.
- The Saints opened the day's scoring with a strip sack by Ryan Surhoff that was recovered in the end zone by Savino Morelli for a touchdown. Their second TD was a 100-yard return of a missed 52-yard field goal to open the second half scoring.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the Saints cashed in on Hobart's early turnover, the Statesmen settled in and scored touchdowns on their next three possessions.
- Taylor's 1-dive into the end zone capped a nine-play, 65-yard march, tying the game with more than five minutes left in the opening quarter.
- Early in the second quarter, sophomore Johnny Harding caught a 10-yard TD pass from Weiss to put the home team in the lead.
- On the Saints' next play from scrimmage, Brosko wrapped up running back James Gescheidle in the backfield and ripped the ball out. Hobart recovered at the Saints' 29.
- On the following snap, Taylor went 29-yards to the end zone and a 21-7 lead.
- SLU had its best shot at the end zone on offense late in the first half. Facing fourth and goal from the 4, the Saints took a shot at the end zone, but sophomore cornerback Corey Rock batted down the fade pass to quell the threat.
- On Hobart's next play, Nolan got behind his defender and Weiss hit him near midfield. Then it was off to the races for a 96-yard touchdown, 7 yards longer than the previous mark set back in 2013 (Pat Conlan to Troy Robinson vs. WPI).
- The defense forced SLU to punt giving the offense one more shot at the end zone with 65 seconds remaining in the half.
- Weiss was 3-for-3 passing for 74 yards, culminating in a 40-yard TD to Nolan with 17 second left.

- Hobart improved to 2-5 overall and moved to 1-3 in Liberty League play.
- St. Lawrence dropped to 2-5, 1-3.
