Herons welcome Yellowjackets Wednesday for Liberty League clash

The William Smith field hockey team will be back in action this Wednesday, Oct. 29 as it hosts the University of Rochester for its crucial conference finale. Action between the Herons and the Yellowjackets is set for 6 p.m. on McCooey Field.

ABOUT THE HERONS:
  • William Smith is 9-8 on the season with a 3-3 record in conference play and is coming off a 1-0 overtime loss to Ithaca on Saturday.
  • Graduate student Rebecca Mantione leads the Herons with 19 points on seven goals and five assists. Senior Lily Gutch follows with 18 points on eight goals and two assists, while sophomore Caroline Kogut adds 14 points on five goals and four assists.
  • Defensively, William Smith is led by sophomore Hadley Harbert with three defensive saves. Junior Leah Griffith and Kogut have added two defensive saves each.
  • First-year Olivia Terranova has played a majority of minutes in goal for William Smith this season. Terranova is 6-6 with a 1.90 GAA and a .714 save percentage.
ABOUT THE YELLOWJACKETS:
  • Rochester brings a 13-5 overall record to Geneva and is 4-2 in conference play. The Yellowjackets are coming off a 2-1 overtime loss to Union on Saturday.
  • Erin Foley leads the team with 14 points on six goals and two assists. Grayson Honig follows with 13 points on six goals and one assist.
  • Defensively, Cassidy Romano leads the team with three defensive saves. Kyla Byer adds two defensive saves for Rochester.
  • Kara Houston has played the majority of minutes in goal with a 13-5 record, a 0.91 GAA, and an .857 save percentage.
SERIES HISTORY:
  • Tuesday will be the 63rd meeting between the Herons and the Yellowjackets. William Smith holds a 45-16-1 advantage in the series, including a 26-6 edge in Geneva.
  • Last season, on Oct. 9, 2024, Rochester defeated William Smith 3-2 in Rochester. Senior Abby Jones and Kogut scored the goals for the Herons.
PLAYOFF PICTURE:
  • William Smith sits in fifth place in the league standings and is currently the final team in the playoff picture.
  • If the Herons defeat the Yellowjackets, they clinch a spot in the postseason and could be as high as the No. 3 seed.
  • William Smith can still clinch a spot in the playoffs with a loss against Rochester, but it will depend on tiebreakers and other results in the league.
