Herons welcome RIT for midweek matchup

The William Smith volleyball team will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 29, when it welcomes RIT for a midweek Liberty League matchup. Action between the Herons and the Tigers is set for 6 p.m. in Bristol Gymnasium. 

Fans who can't make it to Geneva on Wednesday can follow all the action with HWS All-Access Video and Live Stats.

ABOUT THE HERONS:
  • William Smith is 18-4 on the season with a 5-1 mark in conference play. The Herons are receiving 18 votes in this week's AVCA national poll and are coming off losses to then No. 15 Ithaca and William Paterson last weekend.
  • Sophomore Arielle Newsome was named to the Liberty League Weekly Honor Roll after an impressive weekend that saw her put down a career-high 20 kills (.545) against the Bombers.
  • Senior Malya Sayre leads the nation in points per set (5.73) and is third in kills per set (4.89).
  • Sophomore setter Delainy Williams leads the Liberty League and is second in the nation in assists per set (10.82). The Herons are 11th in the nation in assists per set as a team (12.44).
  • Sophomore Emily Fulton is third in the conference in service aces per set (0.62), 10th in kills per set (2.76) and ninth in points per set (3.46).
  • ​​William Smith is fourth in the nation in team hitting percentage (.282) and has four players in the top 10 in the conference: Newsome (1st, .349), senior Hope Von Dohlen (4th, .317), senior Jaylynn McCarthy (7th, .310), and Fulton (10th, .275).
  • The Herons are third in the league in blocks per set (1.85), led by Newsome who is fourth in the conference (0.88).
  • Defensively, William Smith is led by sophomore libero Kali Vanderhoof, who ranks sixth in the conference in digs per set (3.90).
  • The Herons lead the Liberty League in points per set (17.73), hitting percentage (.282), assists per set (12.44), and service aces per set (2.64).
ABOUT THE TIGERS: 
  • RIT enters the match with an 8-14 overall record and is 1-5 in Liberty League play. The Tigers are coming off a 3-1 win over Rutgers-Newark on Saturday.
  • Anna Wasula leads the Tigers offensively, ranked sixth in the conference in kills per set (3.46) and points per set (3.95)
  • Sara Wild averages a team-leading 7.42 assists per set for RIT.
  • Defensively, Isabelle Swain leads the Tigers with 3.33 digs per set, while Isabel Leon leads the team and is third in the conference in blocks with 66.
SERIES HISTORY:
  • Wednesday will be the fourth meeting between the Herons and the Tigers in program history. William Smith has won all three previous meetings against RIT.
  • Last season on Oct. 23, 2024, the Herons swept the Tigers in Rochester. Sayre put down 12 kills in the win, while Von Dohlen added 11. Williams tallied a match-high 31 assists.
