Herons set to host Clarkson in Liberty League 1st round

The third-seeded William Smith volleyball team will welcome sixth-seeded Clarkson to Geneva on Tuesday, Nov. 11 in the Liberty League Tournament first round match. Action between the Herons and the Golden Knights is set to begin at 6 p.m. in Bristol Gymnasium.

ABOUT THE HERONS
  • William Smith enters the week with a 21-6 record (6-2 Liberty League), clinching the third seed in the Liberty League Tournament. The Herons are coming off two nonconference wins over Brandeis and Cortland on Saturday.
  • Senior Malya Sayre leads the Liberty League in kills per set (4.76) and points per set (5.59). Sayre ranks seventh in the nation in kills per set and fourth in the nation in points per set. She was named to the Liberty League Weekly Honor Roll after two strong performances over the weekend.
  • Sophomore Emily Fulton ranks 12th in the conference in kills per set (2.49) and 11th in points per set (3.11).
  • Sophomore setter Delainy Williams leads the conference and ranks third in the nation in assists per set (10.85). As a team, the Herons lead the Liberty League and rank 17th nationally in assists per set (12.37).
  • William Smith is fifth in the nation in team hitting percentage (.265) and has three players ranked in the top-12 of the conference: senior Jaylynn McCarthy (1st, .345), senior Hope Von Dohlen (5th, .320), and sophomore Arielle Newsome (7th, .312).
  • The Herons are first in the league in blocks per set (1.89), led by Newsome who is second in the conference (0.91) and McCarthy at 12th (0.63).
  • Defensively, William Smith is led by sophomore libero Kali Vanderhoof, who ranks fifth in the conference in digs per set (4.05)
  • The Herons lead the Liberty League in hitting percentage (.265), assists per set (12.37), opponent service aces per set (1.40), opponent hitting percentage (.120), and opponent digs (12.22).
ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
  • Clarkson enters postseason play with a 13-13 overall record (3-5 Liberty League) and is the sixth seed in the Liberty League Tournament.
  • Conley Burns leads Clarkson with 312 kills, averaging 3.32 per set, which ranks eighth in the Liberty League. Marin Hangliter follows with 2.64 kills per set.
  • Ashley Currier has recorded a team-leading 652 assists, averaging 7.16 per set.
  • Olivia Baxter is second in the Liberty League in digs per set (5.51) and aces per set (0.64).
  • Clarkson ranks fourth in the conference in blocking, averaging 1.62 per set. Jordyn Leader paces the Golden Knights with 0.83 blocks per set.
SERIES SNAPSHOT
  • Tuesday will be the sixth matchup between William Smith and Clarkson. The Herons hold a 5-1 edge in the series and are on a five-match winning streak against the Golden Knights.
  • Earlier this season, William Smith defeated Clarkson 3-0 in a conference clash in Bristol Gymnasium on Sept. 26.
  • Sayre posted 16 kills (.294) and six digs in the sweep. Newsome (.667) and Fulton (.300) added eight kills each, while Williams tallied a match-high 35 assists and three aces.
  • The winner of the match will advance to the Liberty League semifinal match against second-seeded Union on Friday Nov. 14, at 6:30 p.m. in Ithaca's Ben Light Gymnasium.
