Tigers sneak past Herons in OT

GENEVA, N.Y.—The 22nd-ranked William Smith soccer team was edged by Rochester Institute of Technology 2-1 in overtime in a Liberty League Semifinal on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Tigers scored with just over a minute remaining in the first overtime period to secure the victory.
 
Izzy Thors scored for the Herons. Junior Antonia Goerke played every minute in goal for William Smith and made four saves.
 
Lily Doucette and Bella Coccio scored for RIT. Emily Sanchez went the distance in goal and also had four saves.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • The Herons fall to 11-3-3 overall on the season.
  • RIT improves to 10-3-6 overall and advances to take on Vassar in the Liberty League Championship match.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • RIT finished the contest with a 15-11 advantage in shots and a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
  • William Smith had nine corner kicks in the game, and the Tigers had three.
 
THE WINNER
  • Coccio scored the game-winning goal for the Tigers in the 99th minute.  She ran onto a crossing pass from Doucette and tipped the ball over the goal line. It was her fourth goal of the season.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • RIT opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Doucette scored her third goal of the season. She bent a shot from the left corner into the right side of the cage.
  • Thors tied the game for William Smith in the 68th minute. Her first goal of the season was a mirror image of the RIT goal, bending in a corner kick from the left side.
 
NEAR MISSES
  • Sophomore Grace Metzler had a chance to tie the game in the 36th minute, but her shot was smothered by Sanchez.
  • In the 61st minute, Sanchez made a diving stop on a shot from Julia Bragg.
  • In the extra session, Charlotte Brown nearly won the game for William Smith, but her shot just missed, soaring over the crossbar.
