Hobart hosts Utica in hoops showdown Saturday

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart basketball team will close out the 2025 portion of its schedule at home against Utica on Saturday, Dec. 13. The opening tipoff between the Statesmen and Pioneers is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Bristol Gym.
 
Hobart carries a 7-2 record into the non-conference clash following an 86-66 win over Ithaca on Tuesday. Utica heads to Geneva with a 6-1 record riding a four-game win streak that includes a 69-64 win over Hamilton on Tuesday.

SHARPSHOOTERS
  • The Statesmen were lights out in their Liberty League win over the Bombers, shooting a season-high 66% from the floor.
  • It's the third highest field goal percentage in a game in Hobart history and the highest since the Statesmen set the record (68.5%) at Keuka on Nov. 6, 2021.
 
WHAT SLUMP?
  • Monty Nedd's sophomore season is off to a super start. He's averaging team-highs in points (15.4), assists (4.0) and steals (2.7). He ranks 30th in the nation in steals.
  • Nedd recorded game-highs of 27 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and four steals against Ithaca.
  • In fact, classmates Allen Mordi and Justin Price are also off to strong starts, raising their scoring, rebound, assists and steals averages over last season.
 
ON A ROLL
  • Junior Alex Moesch has reached double digits in the scoring column in every game this season. In fact, he's scored 10 or more points in 15 consecutive games dating back to last season.
  • Hobart's leading 3-point threat, Moesch is averaging 1.9 3-pointers and 14.0 points per game.
  • His 118 career 3-pointers made rank 13th on Hobart's all-time list, two behind No. 12 Andrew Hoy '15 and three away from 10th place which is shared by current Head Coach Stefan Thompson '13 and Greg Stern '12.
 
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
  • Utica is averaging 79.9 points per game while allowing 71.3 points per game.
  • Sophomore Jordan Cain leads the offense, producing a team-high 16.3 points per game.
  • Senior Ryan McCardle leads the nation in 3-point percentage, knocking down 60% of his shots from beyond the arc while contributing 11.4 points per game.
  • Senior Liam Teague adds 11.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots per game. He's 10th in the country in blocked shots.
  • Junior Keyaton Parks chips in 10.3 points and a team-high 8.0 rebounds per game.
 
COMMON GROUND
  • Hobart and Utica have two common opponents so far this season: Hamilton and Rochester.
  • The Statesmen went 2-0 against the Continentals and Yellowjackets. Hobart beat UR on the road 97-88 and topped Hamilton 84-70 in Bristol Gym.
  • The Pioneers split with the pair, falling 103-80 at Rochester on Nov. 15 before besting the Continentals earlier this week.
 
SERIES SNAPSHOT
  • Saturday's game will be the 27th meeting between Hobart and Utica with the Statesmen holding a 17-9 series lead.
  • After an 18-year hiatus, the teams renewed their rivalry last season with Hobart prevailing 77-66 in Utica behind Aidan Rodgers' game-high 19 points.
  • The Pioneers will be making just their fourth visit to Bristol Gym this century. They're looking for their first win in Geneva since 1989.
  • Hobart and Utica first met on the hardwood in 1950 with the Statesmen scoring a 51-48 home win.
