William Smith falls at Union in season finale

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.— The William Smith basketball team saw its season come to a close as it fell to Union 73-44 this afternoon in Viniar Athletic Center.

Sophomore Ava Lobozzo led the Herons with 10 points, seven rebounds and an assist in the loss. Classmate Amelia McCulley chipped in eight points, six rebounds, four steals and a block. With her one block today, McCulley takes sole possession of fourth place on the William Smith career list with 68 career blocks.

Senior Molly Walsh, and sophomores Giana Lobozzo and Mirana Martin all chipped in six points each in the loss. Lobozzo added seven rebounds, three steals and an assist, while Martin chipped in six rebounds and one steal. Walsh tallied three rebounds in her final collegiate game for the Herons.

Jenna Forman and Grace Ardito led Union with 14 points each in the win. The duo combined for 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Emma Riley chipped in 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Garnet Chargers

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Garnet Chargers came out hot in the opening quarter and went on an 8-0 run before an Ava Lobozzo layup ended Unions run. The Garnet Chargers shot 47% from the floor and grabbed 14 rebounds to maintain the early momentum and closed out the first quarter on top 17-8.
  • The Herons responded well in the second quarter and locked down defensively, grabbing nine defensive boards. William Smith pushed the pace, scoring crucial fastbreak points to grab back the momentum. The Herons shot well from the free throw line as well to bring them within 10 points heading into halftime.
  • William Smith opened the second half on a 7-2 scoring run to get within five points of Union's lead. The Garnet Chargers responded well and shot 50% from the floor for the remainder of the quarter and held the Herons to just four more points in the third. Union continued on its momentum to grab an 18-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
  • The Garnet Chargers closed out the conference matchup with an impressive final 10 minutes as it shot 56% from the floor and combined for 25 points. Union held William Smith to 14 points and forced the Herons to six turnovers to close out the contest on top 73-44.

  • William Smith concludes its season with a 3-22 overall record with a 3-15 mark in the Liberty League.
