Fulton, Luzi propel #7 Herons past RPI 16-9

TROY, N.Y.—William Smith junior Taryn Luzi and sophomore Kira Fulton had career days as the seventh-ranked William Smith lacrosse team cruised to a 16-9 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Athletic Village Stadium this afternoon.
 
Luzi led the Herons with a career-high five goals. Fulton logged a career-high eight points on three goals and five assists. The eight points matched her season total from last year. Senior Katherine Murray added six points on three goals and three assists. Sophomore Kayla Quirk had a goal and led William Smith with three ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers. Senior Maura Smeader went the distance in goal and made six saves.
 
Abigail Couzens led the way for the Engineers, recording two goals. Ella Graff added a goal and an assist in the loss.  Lauren DeLeo had a game-high eight draw controls. Jenny Canfield started in goal and made eight saves in 45 minutes. Julianna Lucas made three saves in the final 15 minutes.

  • With the in, William Smith improved to 5-2 overall with a 2-0 record in conference play.
  • RPI falls to 5-3 overall with a 2-1 record in conference play.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • William Smith finished the game with a 34-22 advantage in shots and a 17-7 edge in ground balls.
  • The Engineers won the battle in the draw circle 18-11. 
  • The Herons were 14-for-15 clearing the ball and RPI was 11-for-15 on its clear attempts.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • William Smith jumped out to a 2-0 lead two minutes into the game. Senior Kate Colvin and Luzi had the game's first two goals. Junior Delaney Cassidy and sophomore Mia Falco had assists on the goals.
  • Kira Abdelsayed momentarily halted William Smith's momentum with an unassisted goal five minutes into the game.
  • The Herons extended their lead to 4-1 on unassisted goals from Fulton and Luzi.
  • Murray rounded out the first quarter with a goal off a feed from Fulton and the Herons a 5-2 lead after 15 minutes.
  • Hanna Evans made it a four-goal lead five minutes into the second quarter. Her goal was assisted by Murray. Just over a minute later, Evans returned the favor setting up Murray's goal that made it 7-2.
  • RPI scored three of the next four goals to make it 8-5 with 1:35 left in the half.  Ella Graff, Emily Speck and Kate McFeeley had the tallies for the Engineers. Delaney Cassidy scored for William Smith.
  • Fulton's second goal of the game with 53 seconds left in the second quarter sparked a six-goal run for William Smith that made it 14-5 with 4:49 left in the third quarter.
  • Luzi completed her hat trick with 17 seconds left in the first half.
  • Sophomore Kayla Quirk notched a goal that made it 11-5 five minutes into the second half.
  • Fulton stepped into the playmaker role, dishing out assists on the game's next three goals. She set up tallies for Murray, Falco and Luzi.
  • After a goal from Lisa Boehmer, Fulton recorded her fifth point of the half with a goal to make it 15-6 with 14:03 left in regulation.
  • RPI closed out the contest with a 3-1 run. Abigail Cozzens scored twice and Adelade Hughes once for the Engineers.  Luzi had William Smith's final goal.
 
UP NEXT
The Herons will be back in action on Wednesday, March 26, when the take on St. John Fisher at 4 p.m. It will be the final non-conference contest for the Herons.
