Sailing 2nd at GW Team Race

The Hobart and William Smith sailing team opened the spring portion of its season with a pair of Team Races this past weekend, March 1-2. The action was highlighted by a second place finish at the George Washington Team Race in Washington, D.C.
 
In addition, HWS was also in Annapolis, Maryland, competing in the Navy Team Race Invitaitonal.
 
GW TEAM RACE
  • HWS finished the weekend with a record of 6-2, one win behind regatta winners Navy.
  • Saturday's conditions were ideal in the morning with winds coming in from the southeast at 10-15 mph. Racing was called after the first Round Robin due to gale force winds that came in in the afternoon. Sunday's racing was delayed due to below-freezing temperatures early in the morning. In the afternoon, the second Round Robin was completed in shifty conditions with winds out of the northwest.
  • On Saturday, HWS went 3-1, posting wins over George Washington, Old Dominion, and Pennsylvania. Against the Monarchs, HWS posted a 1-2-3 finish.
  • Sunday's Round Robins also saw HWS post a 3-1 record with wins over the Quakers, the Revolutionaries and the Monarchs.
  • Juan Carlos Lacerda Jones, Jeffrey Klempen, and James Kopack served as skippers, Stella Kim, Elijah Goldman, Rachel Duggan, Henry Breslin, Frances Depke, and Cooper Delbridge competed as crew.
 
NAVY TEAM RACE
  • HWS finished fifth in Annapolis, posting one victory.
  • Sailing on Saturday was in an 8-12 knot wind out of the west. Racing was abandoned at noon after 18 races.Sunday saw sailors compete in 12-15 knot winds out of the northwest. Twelve final races were contested on Sunday afternoon.
  • Nico Garcia-Castrillon, Simon Hammarlund, Owen Harrod, and Dante Garcia were skippers for the races. Sam Carson, Jack Carter, Harrod, and Garcia served as crew.
 
UP NEXT
HWS sailing will be back in action next weekend, March 8-9, competing in three regattas. The team returns to Washington D.C to compete in Georgetown's Jack Johnson Open Team Race, and Cambridge, Massachusetts to compete in Harvard's Wood Trophy Team Race. William Smith sailors will be in Annapolis, Maryland to race in Navy's Jen Harris Women's Team Race.
