Smeader sets wins record, #5 Herons soar past Red Dragons 16-6

GENEVA, N.Y.—The fifth-ranked William Smith lacrosse team cruised to a 16-6 victory over Cortland in a non-conference contest in the Poole Family Dome this afternoon. Senior goalie Maura Smeader made eight saves as she picked up her 60th career win, breaking the William Smith record for career wins.
 
The previous record had stood for 20 years. Rebecca Splain '04 won 59 games from 2001-04.
 
Smeader made eight saves as she improved to 3-0 this season and 60-7 during her career.
 
Offensively, the Herons were led by junior midfielder Natalie Daniels, who had seven points on five goals and two assists. She also had a game-high 11 draw controls. Senior Katherine Murray had five points on four goals and an assist. Mia Falco tacked on three goals.  Senior Livvy Von Heill had three caused turnovers on the defensive end of the field.
 
Toni Cashman led the way for the Red Dragons (2-2). She had three points on two goals and an assist. Isabel Adams had four draw controls. Trinity Parks played all 60 minutes in goal and made 15 saves.

  • The Herons have won 19 straight games at the Poole Family Dome.
  • William Smith has won 44 straight games at home.

  • The Herons finished the game with a 40-16 advantage in shots and a 21-5 edge in the draw circle.
  • Cortland had a 13-12 advantage in ground balls.
  • William Smith was 13-of-14 clearing the ball and Cortland was 14-of-20 on its clear attempts.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • William Smith started the game with a three-goal run.  Murray and Daniels scored free position goals 50 seconds apart. Twenty-five seconds later Falco made it 3-0.  Falco's tally was assisted by Daniels
  • Cortland scored the next three goals to make it 3-3 with 3:56 left in the first quarter. Cashman, Nicole Iapoce and Ashley Melillo scored the goals.
  • William Smith pulled away, scoring 11 of the game's next 12 goals. The Herons kept the Red Dragons off the scoreboard for 33 minutes during the stretch.
  • First-year Lauren Collins started the run with her first collegiate goal. Murray Daniels and Falco scored as William Smith took a 7-3 lead into the break.
  • Daniels' fourth goal of the game opened the second half. 47 seconds later Murray completed her hat trick, giving William Smith a 10-3 lead. Daniels and Murray added two more goals, extending the run to nine goals.
  • Emma Dempsy momentarily halted the Herons' momentum, pocketing her fourth goal of the year to make it 12-4 with eight seconds left in the third quarter.
  • Junior Delaney Cassidy and sophomore Kira Fulton netted goals in the first three minutes of the final frame, giving the Herons a 10-goal lead with 12:37 remaining in regulation.
  • After Cashman scored to make it 14-5 with 9:56 remaining in regulation, Fulton and Falco notched their seventh and ninth goal of the season, respectively.
  • Mia Mitchell rounded out the scoring with 2:40 left in regulation.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action on March 15, when it heads to Salisbury to begin a six-game road trip.
