GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith sailing team finished third at the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women's Team Race Championship on Seneca Lake this weekend, April 12-13. It was the Herons' first time finishing on the podium at the regatta.
In addition, HWS was in Annapolis, Maryland for the Truxtun Umsted regatta. The team finished 10th overall.
MAISA WOMEN'S TEAM RACE
- On Saturday, sailors arrived to Seneca Lake with cloudy skies and a steady drizzle with winds out of the north-northwest ranging from 4-14 knots. Fifty-six total races were completed on Saturday.
- Sunday saw sunny skies with winds ranging from 8-28 knots out of the northwest. The final 28 races were sailed to complete the third round robin.
- William Smith finished the weekend with a 14-7 overall record, finishing third overall.
- Senior Elizabeth Starck and first-years Sabrina Starck and Deana Fedulova competed as skippers while Junior Laura Therien, sophomores Stella Kim, Ella Donaldson and Maya Mahoney and first-year Olivia Wilkins sailed as crew.
- In the opening Round Robin the Herons went 4-3 with wins over Penn, Old Dominon, Fordham and George Washington.In Round 2 William Sith was 5-2 with wins over the Quakers, the Monarchs, the Rams, the Revolutionaries and Navy. The Herons closed out the weekend with another 5-2 record in the final round robin.
- The conference championship came down to the final race of the weekend with Cornell and Georgetown entering with identical 19-1 records. The Big Red took the final race and won the conference crown.
TRUXTUN UMSTED
- Day one of the Truxtun Umsted saw a 6-12 knot north wind that shifted slightly West as the day went on. A total of 16 races, eight each division, were contested on the first day.
- Day two sailors arrived to 10-12 knot breeze out of the north-north-west. The final 12 races, six in each division were contested, to close out the regatta.
- HWS finished the regatta in 10th place with 261 points.
- Juniors Nico Garcia-Castrillon and Valyn Mogensen sailed in A Dvision. They were eighth with 113 points. Garcia-Castrillon and Mogenseon had eight top-10 finishes and won the 12th race.
- In B Division, first-year Kenelm Guiness sailed as skipper and sophomore Reilly Roedel and first-year Sam Carson competed as Crew. They were 12th with 148 points. They compiled eight top-10 finishes.
UP NEXT
HWS will be back in action next weekend, April 19-20, when it heads to Ithaca for the America Trophy. The America Trophy is the MAISA Coed Fleet Race conference championship.
