Herons top Knights 7-0

GENEVA, N.Y.— The William Smith tennis team earned its fifth sweep of the season this afternoon as it defeated SUNY Geneseo 7-0 in a nonconference match in Bristol Field House. The Herons swept both doubles and singles play to improve to 7-9 on the season, while the Knights fall to 8-4 overall.

In doubles play, the Herons set the tone early by winning all three matches against the Knights. At No. 1, junior Haley Levine and sophomore Grace Magna defeated Samantha Rava and Rachel Molloy 6-1 to move to 5-7 on the season.

In the No. 2 spot, senior Julia Pida and sophomore Mae Kellersman also improved to 5-7 on the season as they edged Natalia Pipes and Joan Catalano in a close tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6). At No. 3, first-year Bethany Walker and junior Maddy Buck remained undefeated in doubles action as they topped Talia Wutz and Elena DeRiso, 6-1. 

Taking the lead after doubles play, William Smith continued its strong performance into singles action, winning all six matches in straight sets. At No. 1, senior Natalie Haythorn defeated Pipes 6-0, 6-1, while at No. 2, Levine defeated Rava 6-1, 6-0.

Kellersman delivered another commanding performance in the No. 3 spot, beating Wutz 6-0, 6-1, to earn her team-best seventh singles win of the season. At No. 4, junior Marin Montagne got back in the win column as she earned a 6-1, 6-3 win over Molloy.

In the No. 5 spot, first-year Mia Jacobs improved to 4-0 in dual match play as she defeated Catalano 6-1, 6-1. Rounding out the sweep, senior Mia Tetrault claimed a 6-2, 7-5 victory over DeRiso at No. 6. Tetrault also improved to 4-0 in dual match play with the win.

William Smith will return to action on Wednesday, April 23, to face RIT in a crucial Liberty League matchup. First serve between the Herons and the Tigers is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the HWS Tennis Center.
