Conte homers during 4-hit day at SLU

CANTON, N.Y.—Sophomore Cole Conte went 4-for-7 with a home run for the Hobart baseball team in a doubleheader at St. Lawrence this afternoon. The Saints prevailed in both games by the score of 7-3.

Conte went 3-for-4 in Game 1 and factored into all three of Hobart's runs in Game 2, including his first collegiate home run.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME 1
  • Senior Nate Johnson's sacrifice fly scored first-year Jack Farnen to give Hobart a 1-0 first inning lead.
  • St. Lawrence took the lead with a five-hit, four-run second inning.
  • Farnen led off the third with a double and scored on sophomore Connor Schmiedlin's single through the left side, but the 4-2 deficit was as close as the Statesmen would get.
  • The Saints added to their lead with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to carry a 7-2 lead into the ninth.
  • Hobart loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but only managed one run on Farnen's sacrifice fly.
  • SLU's Michael Hutchins got the win with a solid seven-inning performance on the mound, scattering five hits, allowing just two runs and striking out four.
  • All nine batters in the Saints lineup contributed at least one hit.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME 2
  • The Statesmen once again seized an early lead when Conte's sacrifice fly scored Nate Johnson in the second inning.
  • SLU tied the game in the third and took the lead on Mike Siano's solo homer in the sixth.
  • Conte answered with his round-tripper in the seventh, tying the game at 2.
  • The Saints (10-18) struck for five runs in the bottom of the eight to take a 7-2 lead.
  • In the ninth with two outs and Johnson on third, Conte reached on an error by the third baseman that also allowed Johnson to score, completing the day's scoring.
  • Despite ending up with a no-decision, St. Lawrence's Boden Driscoll delivered a strong 7 1/3 innings on the mound. He struck out eight, while allowed just five hits and two runs.

UP NEXT
  • Hobart (16-12) will return to McDonough Park for its next game, Tuesday, April 22 when the Statesmen host Alfred State (18-12). First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
