HWS 7th at America Trophy

ITHACA, N.Y.—The Hobart and William Smith sailing team finished seventh in the America Trophy host by Cornell this past weekend, April 19-20. The America Trophy serves as the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Fleet Race Championship.
 
Only one race was completed on Saturday as the wind did not cooperate. Ranging from one to four knots it swirled from all different directions. On Sunday, 11 races were completed in both divisions with the wind coming out of the north-northwest.
 
REGATTA FACTS
  • HWS finished seventh in an 18 team field, compiling 183 points on the weekend.
  • Junior Jeffrey Klempen and senior Rachel Duggan competed in B Division for HWS, placing fourth. They were in the top-10 in all but two races and had five top-three finishes. Klempen and Duggan won the fifth, ninth and 10th races.
  • Juniors Juan Carlos LaCerda Jones and Cooper Delbridge and senior Frances Depke sailed in A Division. They finished ninth with 118 points. Lacerda Jones and Depke won the lone race on Saturday. The trio then combined for five top-10 finishes on Sunday.
  • Georgetown won the conference championship, posting 94 points on the weekend. Navy was second 16 points behind. The Hoyas earned MAISA's automatic bid to the Open Fleet Race Championships.
  • HWS will wait and see if it gets an at-large bid. The full Fleet Race Fields, men's and women's will be announced April 29 at 7 p.m.

UP NEXT
HWS will be back in action next weekend, April 26-27, when it heads to King's Point, New York, for the Admiral's Cup.
