ITHACA, N.Y.— The William Smith tennis team concluded its season this afternoon as it fell 6-1 to Ithaca in a crucial Liberty League match at Reis Tennis Center. With the loss, the Herons end the 2024-25 season with an 8-11 overall record and a 2-6 record in conference play, while the Bombers improve to 6-11 overall with a 2-6 mark in the Liberty League.
In doubles action, Ithaca claimed the doubles point by winning all three matches. At No. 1, senior Natalie Haythorn and junior Marin Montagne put up a strong fight but ultimately fell to Taylor Crain and Sabrina Cheung in a close 6-4 match.
In singles play, the Herons' lone point came from first-year Bethany Walker at No. 6. Walker defeated Eliana Chelnick in straight sets, winning 6-1, 7-6, to improve to 8-9 in her rookie season. She ended the season on a three-match win streak for William Smith.
The Herons continued to fight in singles play, forcing third sets in two matches. Sophomore Grace Magna pushed Cheung in the No. 3 spot, but ultimately fell 1-6, 6-0, 2-6. Classmate Mae Kellersman also put up a fight in the No. 4 spot, falling to Lauren Rodriguez 6-4, 6-7, 3-5.
Junior Haley Levine put on a thrilling performance at No. 2, but dropped a 7-6, 7-6 decision to Alys Pop.
The win secured the sixth seed for Ithaca, while William Smith dropped to seventh in the conference standings and will miss the postseason tournament.
