KING'S POINT, N.Y.—The Hobart and William Smith sailing team closed out its regular season this past weekend, April 26-27, winning the Admiral's Cup. It marked HWS' first win at the regatta since 2018.
Sailors were met with challenging conditions throughout the weekend with the wind oscillating throughout the day on Saturday. In total, 10 races in each division were contested despite having to abandon several races and shift the course around. Sunday saw 20-25 knot winds out of the northwest. The conditions proved to be particularly challenging and only two additional races were completed.
ABOUT THE REGATTA
- HWS finished first overall, compiling 158 points on the weekend. HWS beat out second place Northeastern by a mere two points.
- After day 1, HWS was in third place with 137 points and Fordham led the regatta 118 points. The HWS sailors compiled four top 10 finishes in the final four races, including a first place finish in the regatta's final race to bring home the trophy.
- HWS won B Division, compiling 60 points through 12 races.
- Junior Nico Garcia-Castrillon, sophomore Ella Donaldson and junior Laura Therien represented HWS in the Division. Garcia Castrillon and Donaldson competed together on Saturday. They were in the top 10 in every race and picked up a first place finish in race 6.
- Garcia-Castrillon and Therien sailed together on Sunday. They were seventh in the first race and then crossed the line first in the final race of the weekend to secure the win.
- First-year James Kopack, sophomore Stella Kim and first-year Dante Garcia represented HWS in A Division. They combined for five top-10 finishes, including two second places.
