Murray records 200th point, #13 Herons cruise past Eagles in NCAA Opener

AMHERST, Mass.—Thirteen different players scored as the 13th-ranked William Smith lacrosse team cruised to a 25-2 victory over Husson in an NCAA tournament game at Pratt Field at Lehman Stadium on the campus of Amherst College this afternoon.
 
With the win, the Herons advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament. William Smith will be back in action tomorrow, May 11, at 1 p.m. when they take on 11th-ranked Amherst. The Mammoths are 11-5 overall this season.
 
First-year Cynthia Lyman led the way for William Smith, recording a career-high seven points on two goals and five assists. Junior Hannah Evans had four goals. Senior Katherine Murray and Lauren Collins also had hat tricks in the win. Senior Kate Colvin had a game-high seven draw controls. Junior Lily Kuhn led the team with four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Senior Maura Smeader played 45 minutes in goal. First-year Samantha Edwards came on for the fourth quarter and had a caused turnover and a ground ball in her collegiate debut.
 
Averi Baker and Maddy Benoit scored the goals for the Eagles. Benoit also had two draw controls. Jordyn Lengle had three caused turnovers and three ground balls in the losing effort. Emma Beegz played all 60 minutes in goal and made six saves.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • With the win, the Herons improve to 13-4 overall on the season.
  • Husson falls to 7-8 on the year.
 
MILESTONE
  • With three goals in today's game, Katherine Murray became the 12th player in program history to record her 200th career point. Her 201 points are 12th in program history. Murray moved into eighth on the all-time goals list (152).
 
BROKEN RECORDS
  • William Smith's 25 goals were the most in an NCAA tournament game in program history. The previous record was 24 in a 24-10 win over Hartwick on May 13, 1995.
  • The Herons' 25 draw controls in today's game were a William Smith single-game record.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Herons dominated the stat sheet, finishing the game with a 40-3 advantage in shots, a 19-9 edge in ground balls and a 25-5 edge in draw controls.
  • William Smith was a perfect 10-for-10 on its clear attempts, and Husson was 8-for-19 clearing the ball.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Herons scored the game's first 12 goals and never looked back. Using their depth, William Smith had five players score the game's first five goals, including Taryn Luzi, Kayla Quirk, Kira Fulton, Murray and Colvin.
  • Murray became the first multi-goal scorer, firing home a pair of goals in a 40-second span to give William Smith a 7-0 lead. Mia Falco, first-year Maeve Barrins and Evans added goals to close out the first quarter.
  • Collins notched her first goal of the game less than a minute into the second quarter. The tally was assisted by Falco. Two minutes later, Fulton added her second goal of the game, making it 12-0.
  • Husson briefly halted the run when Baker scored on a free-position shot.
  • Barrins, Collins and Evans answered the Eagles' goal, extending William Smith's lead to 15-1 with just under 5 minutes remaining in the first half.
  • Benoit had the final goal of the opening 30 minutes, converting on a feed from Kate Boehmcke.
  • William Smith scored all 10 goals in the second half. Lyman started the run converting on a free-position attempt a minute into the frame. Two minutes later, first-year Hadley Crosby scored her first career goal, burying a feed from Alexandra Tapia. Evans completed her hat trick with 9:04 remaining in the third quarter. Her goal was assisted by Lyman.
  • Sophomore Meredith Montgomery made it 19-2 with 6:26 remaining in the frame. Two minutes later, Collins completed her hat trick off a feed from Lyman. Lyman tacked on a goal with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter. Her second goal of the game made it 21-2 after 45 minutes.
  • Evans, Crosby, Tapia and Montgomery scored in the fourth quarter for William Smith. Evans' goal was assisted by Lyman, and Crosby's goal was set up by Lyman.
