ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.—The William Smith College sailing team finished 12th at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women's Eastern Semifinals. The regatta was hosted by St. Mary's College on the St. Mary's River.
Thirty-six teams began competition on Tuesday in two 18-team semifinals. The top nine in each semifinal advanced to the championship regatta, which starts today.
ABOUT THE REGATTA
- The Herons were placed in the Eastern semifinal with Boston College, Boston University, Bowdoin, Cornell, Dartmouth, Fordham, Harvard, MIT, North Carolina State, Old Dominion, St. Mary's Md., Stanford, Hawaii, South Florida, Texas and Wisconsin.
- Tuesday was met with tricky conditions with light shifting breezes. Only five total races were contested.
- On Wednesday, an additional 13 races were contested. In total, 18 races, nine in each division, were completed.
- Stanford won the Eastern Semifinal with 69 points.
HOW THE HERONS FARED
- William Smith finished in a tie for 12th with St. Mary's Md. They both had 200 points. The Herons were awarded the head-to-head tiebreaker.
- First-years Deanna Fedulova and Sabrina Starck sailed as skippers in B Division while sophomore Maya Mahoney and first-year Olivia Wilkins competed as crew. They finished in a three-way tie for 10th with the Seahawks and Penn with 91 points.
- They were in the top 10 in four of the nine races.
- In A Division, Senior Elizabeth Starck served as skipper and sophomore Ella Donaldson and junior Laura Therien sailed as crew. They compiled 109 points on the weekend, finishing tied for 13th.
