Sailing 9th in Eastern Semifinal, advances to championship

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.—The Hobart and William Smith sailing team earned a spot in the 2025 Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Open Fleet Race National Championship. HWS finished ninth in the Open Eastern Semifinals with 157 points.
 
Thirty teams began competition on Tuesday in two 18-team semifinals. The top nine in each semifinal advance to the championship regatta, which begins tomorrow, May 29. The 18 remaining teams will compete for the Henry A. Morss Memorial Trophy awarded to the national champion.
 
ABOUT THE REGATTA
  • HWS competed in the Open Eastern Semifinal with Brown, Connecticut College, Cornell, Eckerd, Florida State, George Washington, Harvard, Michigan, MIT, Navy, Northeastern, Penn, Roger Williams, Rhode Island, St. Mary's Md., Tulane and Webb Institute. 
  • Racing started on Tuesday in cloudy conditions with winds peaking at 10 knots.
  • Wednesday's racing was competed in rainy conditions with breezes coming out of the east/northeast at 5-12 knots.
  • Harvard won the semifinal with 123 points.. Brown, Navy, Tulane, St. Mary's Md., Rhode Island, MIT and George Washington joined HWS in securing a spot in the Open Fleet Race Championship.
 
HOW HWS FARED
  • HWS finished ninth overall, compiling 157 points. It edged out Cornell by seven points.
  • Sophomore Jeffrey Klempen and senior Rachel Duggan represented HWS in B Division. They finished second, compiling 55 points.
  • Klempen and Duggan finished in the top 10 in all but one race. They opened Wednesday, winning races five and six. Klempen and Duggan secured HWS's spot in the championship regatta with a fourth place finish in the final race.
  • Junior Juan Carlos LaCerda Jones and senior Frances Depke sailed in A Division. They placed 12th with 102 points. LaCerda Jones and Depke were in the top 10 in five races, including a fourth place in the final race of A Division.
 
UP NEXT
HWS returns to the College Sailing Fleet Race National Championship for the 24th time since 1996. HWS won the event in 2005 in Austin, Texas. HWS finished on the podium in 1998, 2000, 2004 and 2011.
