ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.—The Hobart and William Smith sailing team concluded its 2024-25 racing season competing in the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Open Fleet Race National Championship on the St. Mary's River. HWS finished 17th overall.
HWS advanced to the finals with a ninth-place finish in the Eastern Semifinals. Thirty-six teams started the regatta on Tuesday, with the top nine teams in each semifinal advancing to the championship regatta.
ABOUT THE REGATTA
- The regatta was scheduled to start on Thursday, May 29, but no races were contested due to light winds.
- After a delay on shore this morning, 14 races, seven in each division were contested.
- HWS competed against Stanford, Navy, Dartmouth, Yale, Harvard, Brown Tufts, George Washington, College of Charleston, Boston College, Miami, Bowdoin, Georgetown, Rhode Island, Tulane, St. Mary's Md. And MIT.
- Stanford won the regatta and claimed the Henry A. Morss Memorial Trophy. Navy was second and Dartmouth rounded out the podium.
HOW HWS FARED
- Hobart and William Smith finished today's 14 races with 193 points. HWS was 17th.
- Sophomore Jeffrey Klempen and senior Rachel Duggan sailed in B Division. They finished 11th with 72 points.
- Klempen and Duggan had three top 10 finishes.
- Junior Juan Carlos LaCerda Jones and first-year James Kopack competed as skippers and senior Frances Depke and sophomore Stella Kim competed as Crew in A Division.
- They finished 18th with 121 points.
- This was HWS' 25th appearance at the Open Fleet Race Nationals.
