Statesmen fall to Engineers in Liberty League title match

ITHACA, N.Y.— The Hobart tennis team took on No. 10 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute this afternoon in the Liberty League title match at Cornell's Reis Tennis Center. The Statesmen were defeated 4-0 by the Engineers, concluding their season with a 12-9 overall record.

The Statesmen picked up a strong win at No. 3 doubles, where seniors Troy Steiner and Jacob Linares defeated Nico Luis and Tasmay Shah, 6-3. However, Hobart narrowly missed earning the doubles point as it fell in the other two matches.

At No. 2, seniors Hyat Oyer and Rahul Vallabhajosula battled Tsubi Okada and Joel McCandless in a tight match but came up just short, 6-4. RPI secured the doubles point with wins on courts one and two.

RPI clinched the match before all singles matches were completed, securing their fourth point despite a strong showing from Hobart. Oyer put on an impressive showing, challenging seventh-ranked Aiden Drover-Mattinen in the No. 1 spot, but was trailing 7-5, 5-2 before the match was clinched.

At No. 2, junior Nick Fischer was battling Andy Zhu but was trailing 6-3, 3-2 when the Engineers clinched their fourth point. Linares continued to battle in the No. 6 spot and was locked in a first-set tiebreaker, tied 6-6 with Shah.

With the win, RPI clinched the Liberty League's automatic qualifier to the 2025 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships.
