Game Recap: Hobart Football | | Ken DeBolt

Late TD lifts Brockport over Hobart 14-10

BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The Hobart football team scored first and held the lead over Brockport for most of the afternoon, but the host Golden Eagles scored a touchdown with just 2:13 remaining in the non-conference clash to take their only lead of the day. Brockport made the lead stand up, holding on for a 14-10 win.

The game was controlled by the defenses. Senior free safety Alex Smith led the Statesmen with 10 tackles and an interception. Linebacker Luca Friedman paced the Golden Eagles with 11 stops, including a sack.

Hobart got most of its yardage on the day through the air. Sophomore quarterback Aidan Conrath completed 14-of-31 passes for 170 yards. Wide receiver Marcus Peterson caught four passes for a game-high 91 yards. The Statesmen ground game was limited to just 44 yards.

Brockport leaned heavily on running back Isaiah Simmons. He rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for 29 yards.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hobart opened the day's scoring on its second possession of the first quarter. The drive featured a 50-yard touchdown pass from Conrath to sophomore Johnny Harding wiped out by a holding penalty, a roughing the punter penalty that kept the drive alive for the Statesmen and a 2-yard dive into the end zone by junior quarterback Tru Styles. The six-minute drive covered 49 yards in 12 plays.
  • Brockport pulled even early in the second quarter with an 8-play, 79-yard drive. Simmons carried the ball three times on the drive, gaining 22, 11 and 16 yards. The last carry was into the end zone.
  • The Statesmen answered with another scoring drive, this time settling for a 29-yard field goal by junior Luke Monteyne. Conrath found Peterson on a 33-yard pass play for the long play of the drive.
  • On its ensuing drive, Brockport drove to the Hobart 22 but turned the ball over on downs with an incompletion on fourth down.
  • The Statesmen led 10-7 at the half.
  • The Golden Eagles got the ball to start the second half, but sophomore cornerback Corey Rock spoiled the drive with his first interception of the season. The third quarter ended scoreless.
  • Late in the fourth quarter, senior punter Vicente Lyon launched a 56-yard punt that went for a touchback. A 10-yard holding penalty backed Brockport up to its own 10 with just over five minutes left. The Golden Eagles marched down the field in eight plays, scoring on a 4-yard run by Simmons.

HEADED HOME
  • Following back-to-back road games to open the season, Hobart will head home to play its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 20. The Statesmen will welcome Utica to Boswell Field at Urick Stadium for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
