Herons rally for shootout win over Flying Dutchmen

Head Coach Sophie Riskie '07 secures 50th career win

GENEVA, N.Y.— After 60 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime play, the William Smith field hockey team and Lebanon Valley's William Smith Classic thriller was decided by a shootout. The Herons prevailed 2-0 to secure a 2-1 victory, clinching Head Coach Sophie Riskie '07's 50th career win as head coach of the Herons. With the win, William Smith improves to 4-2 on the season, while Lebanon Valley falls to 3-3 overall.

The thrilling nonconference showdown saw both sides produce impressive numbers on the scoresheet. The Herons held a 25-16 advantage in shots, including a 14-10 edge in shots on target. The Flying Dutchmen held a 12-9 advantage in penalty corners, as well as a 13-9 edge in saves in the instant classic.

Graduate student Rebecca Mantione scored the lone goal for William Smith. It was her third straight game with a goal and her fifth of the season. Mantione led the way with six shots, landing four on target in the win. Sophomore Ana Dios Vidal secured the win for the Herons as her shootout attempt was successful to make it 2-0 after classmate Caroline Kogut opened the scoring in the shootout. Senior's Lily Gutch and Abby Jones also impressed for William Smith and combined for six shots on target in the win.

Sophomore goalie Baker Jeremiah played all 80 minutes in goal for William Smith and made a career-high eight saves in the win. Jeremiah stopped all four shootout attempts by the Flying Dutchmen to secure the victory. She is now 2-1 on the season.

MATCH MOMENTS:
  • The opening quarter saw both sides trade momentum and possession through the first 15 minutes. William Smith created more offensive chances but were kept off the board in the early stages of the game.
  • Just under four minutes before halftime, Lebanon Valley would strike first. Gracie Johnson took a shot from the top of the arc after being awarded a penalty corner. Her shot found the stick of Rebecca Lane, who tipped a shot past Jeremiah to grab the lead heading into halftime.
  • The Herons responded well in the third quarter and applied pressure high on the field. The pressure paid off when William Smith was awarded a penalty corner in the 40th minute. Junior Leah Griffith inserted the ball to Mantione at the top of the arc. Mantione dodged around one defender and fired off a shot past Weidenhammer to tie the game at 1-1.
  • William Smith continued to put on the pressure in the fourth quarter, firing off five shots but Weiddenhammer stood tall and kept the Herons off the board forcing the game to overtime.
  • The first overtime period saw both sides trade the possession and momentum as the field opened up. The two sides combined for 14 shots in 10 minutes. The Flying Dutchmen had the best scoring chance of the first overtime period as Claire Weidenhammer fired off a shot that beat Jeremiah. Junior Elle Oberfield was there to save the day and swiped the ball off the line and out of danger. It was her first career defensive save for William Smith.
  • The Herons came out hot in the second overtime, firing off seven shots, but none would beat Weidenhammer as she racked up five saves in the final 10 minutes. William Smith and Lebanon Valley would remain tied at the end of the contest, sending the game to a shootout.
SHOOTOUT MOMENTS:
  • William Smith was up first as Kogut took on Weidenhammer in the first round of the shootout. Kogut's initial shot was saved but her rebound slipped through to give the Herons a 1-0 lead.
  • Lebanon Valley's Amelia Taube looked to beat Jeremiah one on one, but Jeremiah came up big to maintain the lead for William Smith.
  • The second round saw Weidenhammer and Jeremiah come up with big saves as they denied junior Kylee Knuschke and Johnson to keep the score at 1-0 William Smith.
  • Dios Vidal was next up for the Herons in the shootout. Like Kogut, her initial shot was saved but her rebound slipped past the goalie to give William Smith a 2-0 lead. Lebanon Valley challenged the goal but the video review showed the goal was good.
  • Jeremiah would come up big again, making a diving stop on an Abby Rodenberger attempt to keep the Flying Dutchmen off the board.
  • Sophomore Mia Batchelder had a chance to add to the Herons lead but Weidenhammer swiped the ball away to keep the score at 2-0.
  • With the game on the line, Reese Arnold looked to keep Lebanon Valley in the game but Jeremiah made her fourth stop of the shootout to secure the win for William Smith.
COACHES CORNER:

"I'm really proud of the resilience our team showed today," said Head Coach Sophie Riskie '07. Coming off yesterday's double overtime battle, it took a lot of grit to dig deep again and finish strong in a shootout. We stayed composed under pressure, and it was a true team effort from start to finish. Wins like this show the character and toughness of our group."
