9/15/2025 11:51:00 AM

The Hobart and William Smith sailing team was back on the water this past weekend, Sept. 13-14, competing in three regattas. The weekend's competition was highlighted by a first place finish at the Jack Boehringer Open Invitational in Ithaca, New York.

William Smith sailors were also in Ithaca, taking part in the Susan Rogers Memorial, where they finished second. Two Heron sailors traveled to Annapolis, Maryland, to compete for the Faye Bennet Trophy, the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women's Singlehanded Championship.

JACK BOEHRINGER
  • The wind flirted with the four-knot limit all day on Saturday, including a long delay on shore in the morning. Five races in total were completed in a north-northwesterly breeze. Sunday saw three sets completed in a five- to seven-knot breeze.
  • With only six teams, all three divisions were sailed as one combined 18-boat Division.
  • HWS "A Division" boat comprised of juniors Jeffrey Klempen and Stella Kim dominated the weekend, finishing with 22 points, thirty clear of the second-place team. They crossed the line first in eight of the 11 races and added two third-place finishes.
  • Sophomore James Kopack and first-year Jamie McGuffe competed in "C Division," finishing sixth overall with 89 points. They crossed the line in the top 10 in all but two races.
  • Seniors Nico Garcia-Castrillon and Valyn Mogensen competed in "B Division." They were 10th with 107 points.  The duo turned in four top-10 finishes.

SUSAN ROGERS
  • Like the Boehringer, the Susan Rogers was sailed in one combined division.
  • Sophomore Deana Fedulova and junior Bennett O'Keefe led the way for William Smith, finishing the weekend second with 44 points. They won three races and were in the top 10 nine times.
  • Sophomores Sabrina Starck and Olivia Wilkins placed fifth with 72 points. They were in the top 10 eight times.
  • First-years Keelyn Brink and Molly Pile were 12th.

FAYE BENNET MAISA WOMEN'S SINGLEHANDED
  • The first conference championship regatta of the season, the Faye Bennet, started with an on-shore postponement while sailors waited for wind to fill in. Eight races were completed on Saturday in an 8-12 knot wind. One additional race was completed on Sunday.
  • First-year Moira Padilla Velasquez led the way for William Smith. She was one of five sailors to finish the weekend tied for fifth with 72 points. When the tiebreakers were settled, she was awarded ninth. Padilla Velasquez was in the top 10 in eight races.
  • Fellow first-year Dagny Kruger was 16th. She had a fourth-place finish in the fourth race of the weekend.
