2nd half surge sends Hobart past Brockport 4-1

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart soccer team scored three goals in the second half as it knocked off Brockport 4-1 in a non-conference contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With the win, the Statesmen improve to 5-0-1 overall.

For the second time in the last three games, sophomore forward Brady Leitner scored twice to lead the way for the Statesmen. Junior Joe Pariano and sophomore Griffin Coutts also had goals in the victory. Senior goalie Tommy Chyzowych played all 90 minutes in goal and made one save.

Khadim Amar scored for the Golden Eagles (1-3-1). Matthew Sandison started in goal and made five saves in just over 77 minutes of work. Andrew Watrous played the final 12 minutes and made one save.

  • At 5-0-1, Hobart is off to its best start since 2011 when it won its first seven games to start the year.

KEY STATS
  • Hobart dominated the box score, finishing the contest with a 22-6 advantage in shots, including a 10-2 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Statesmen, who entered the game eighth in the nation in corner kicks per game, had 11 corner kicks, and Brockport had one.

MATCH MOMENTS
  • Leitner had the game's first scoring chance in the fourth minute. His shot was stopped by a diving Sandison.
  • Four minutes later, Hobart was awarded a penalty kick when Will Slayton was taken down in the 18-yard box. Pariano stepped in to take the kick and buried a shot into the lower left corner of the cage. It was his first goal of the year.
  • Brockport tied the game in the 19th minute when Amar fired a left-footed volley into the right corner of the cage. It was his first goal of the year.
  • In the 43rd minute, Pariano nearly scored his second goal of the game, but his shot was turned aside by Sandison.
  • Leitner gave the Statesmen a 2-1 lead in the 53rd minute. He ran onto a long through ball from Slayton, dribbled the ball into the box and fired a shot off of the left goal post. He collected his own rebound and slipped a shot across the goal line.
  • Ten minutes later, Leitner notched his team-leading sixth goal of the year. He dodged around a defender and ripped past Sandison.
  • Coutts rounded out the scoring in the 78th minute, scoring on a corner kick that was misplayed by the Brockport goalie. It was his first collegiate goal.
