William Smith welcomes #21 Geneseo for midweek matchup

2 Herons earn Liberty League recognition

The William Smith field hockey team will welcome nonconference foe, No. 21 SUNY Geneseo, to Geneva for a midweek matchup Wednesday, Sept. 3. Action between the Herons and the Knights is set for 6 p.m. on McCooey Field.

Fans who can't make it to McCooey Field can follow the action with HWS All-Access Video and Live Stats. The game will be broadcast on WHWS-FM (105.7 in Geneva).

Additionally, two Herons were recognized by the Liberty League for their performances during opening weekend. First-year goalie Olivia Terranova was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week, while sophomore Caroline Kogut was recognized on the weekly honor roll.

Terranova came off the bench in the second quarter for William Smith as it rallied to defeat St. John Fisher 3-2 in overtime. She made two saves in 45:44 to secure the win in her collegiate debut. Terranova then earned her first career start and shutout in the 3-0 win over Ohio Wesleyan, where she made a season-high three saves.

Kogut was named to the weekly honor roll after a standout weekend as she tallied three goals, including one game-winning goal, and an assist. She scored twice to spark a comeback against the Cardinals on Friday before opening the scoring against Battling Bishops on Sunday.
 
ABOUT THE HERONS:
  • William Smith enters the weekend with a 2-0 record. The Herons are coming off a 3-0 win over Ohio Wesleyan Sunday that saw three different players score, including two Herons score their first collegiate goal.
  • William Smith boasts a league-leading 25 shots per game and 12 shots-on-goal per game (.480).
  • Kogut (3G, 1A) leads the team with seven points, while senior Abby Jones follows with three points (1G, 1A).

  • Geneseo (2-0) is ranked No. 21 in the NFHCA preseason poll and is coming off a 5-1 win over Kenyon on Saturday.
  • The Knights have averaged 24.0 shots per game, with a shots-on-goal percentage of .792.
  • Ella Greico leads the Knights with seven points (3G, 1A), while Ava Harman adds three points (1G, 1A).
  • Bridget Schafer has made seven saves throughout 120 minutes of action in goal and boasts a 0.50 GAA and a 0.875 save percentage.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Wednesday's matchup will be the 27th meeting between the Herons and the Knights.
  • William Smith leads the series 20-6, with a 14-3 edge in Geneva.

  • The head coaches in Wednesday's contest are both William Smith field hockey alums.
  • Sophie Riskie '07 is in her fifth season as head coach of William Smith. She is the Herons' career points leader (217) and led the team to three NCAA tournaments.
  • Margaret McConnell '14 is in her seventh season at the helm of Geneseo. She produced 59 career points and helped the Herons to three NCAA tournament appearances.
