KINGS POINT, N.Y.—The Hobart and William Smith sailing team was in action at three regattas hosted by the Merchant Marine Academy this weekend. The weekend was highlighted by a first place finish at the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Top Nine Combined.
Three Hobart sailors also competed in the MAISA Top 9 ILCA, a tune-up for this weekend's Carl Van Duyne. William Smith finished fifth at the MAISA Top Nine Women's
MAISA TOP 9 OPEN
- With only nine teams competing, the MAISA Top Nine, the regatta was sailed in one combined division.
- HWS finished first overall, compiling 177 points on the weekend.
- Hobart's A Division boat, comprised of seniors Juan Carlos LaCerda Jones, Valyn Mogensen and Laura Therien, finished first overall with 75 points. They finished 10 points clear of Penn's B Division boat.
- They were in the top 10 in 12 of the 14 races, including three victories.
- Juniors JJ Klempen and Stella Kim and senior Cooper Delbridge were fourth overall with 103 points. They were second among B Division crews.
- They finished in the top 10 in nine races, including a victory in race four.
MAISA TOP 9 WOMEN'S
- Like the Open Top 9, the Women's Top 9 was sailed in one combined division.
- William Smith was fifth, finishing the weekend with 249 points.
- Sophomore Deanna Fedulova, junior Reilly Roedel and senior Juliana Victor represented the Herons in A Division. They finished fifth with 104 points.
- They compiled 10 top 10 finishes and won the 11th race.
- Sophomores Sabrina Starck and Olivia Wilkins sailed in B Division. They were 14th overall. They won the sixth race.
MAISA TOP 9 ILCA
- Senior Nico Garcia-Castrillon, junior TJ Allison and sophomore Jack Carter competed in the laser event at Kings Point.
- Garcia-Castrillon led the way, finishing sixth with 81 points. He was in the top 10 in all but three races and picked up one victory.
- Allison was 11th with 134 points. He was in the top 10 in seven races.
- Carter was 14th. He had three top-10 finishes.
UP NEXT
HWS will be back in action next weekend, Sept. 27-28, for three regattas. Hobart sailors will be back in Kings Point for the Carl Van Duyne, the MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship. HWS will also be at the New York Maritime Open in Throggs Neck. William Smith sailors will make the trip down to Annapolis, Maryland, for the Women's ACC Eliminations.
