Herons tripped up by #14 Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y.— The William Smith field hockey team dropped a nonconference matchup at No. 14 Hamilton this evening 4-1. With the loss, the Herons fall to 5-4 on the season, while the Continentals improve to 5-2 overall.
 
The Continentals held a 16-9 advantage in shots, including a 12-6 edge in shots on goal in the nonconference showdown. Hamilton also earned 10 penalty corners compared to William Smith's five. The Herons held an 8-5 advantage in saves in the loss.
 
Senior Lily Gutch scored the lone goal for William Smith, while graduate student Rebecca Mantione tallied the assist on the goal. Mantione led the Herons with four shots, landing two on target while five other players fired off one shot each in the setback. Sophomore Hadley Harbert recorded her second career defensive save for William Smith.
 
First-year Olivia Terranova played 23:41 in goal for the Herons and registered six saves in the loss. She is now 2-3 on the season. Sophomore Baker Jeremiah came in for the final 36:19 and made one save for William Smith.

MATCH MOMENTS:
  • Hamilton opened the scoring at the 4:53 mark in the opening quarter after a Kenna White pass found the stick of Becky Felker. Felker fired off a shot that beat Terranova to give the Continentals an early lead.
  • Hamilton continued to apply the offensive pressure and almost doubled its lead after being awarded a penalty corner at the 12:58 mark. Eleanor Cooper inserted the ball to Claire Tratnyek, who fired a shot, but Harbert was there to sweep the ball off the line for her second defensive save of the season.
  • The Continentals would double their lead in the 14th minute after being awarded a penalty corner. After several passes at the top of the arc, the ball found the stick of Lilly Truchon. Truchon fired off a shot that beat Terranova to give Hamilton a 2-0 lead. Isabelle Nahon was credited with the assist.
  • Hamilton added to its lead at the 20:58 mark when Felker notched her second goal of the game. Felker's back-handed swiped slipped past Terranova to give the Continentals a 3-0 lead.
  • The Herons responded well in the third quarter, trying to grab the momentum from the Continentals. William Smith fired off three shots and earned two penalty corners in the third but were kept off the board heading into the final 15 minutes.
  • William Smith nearly got on the board in the 45th minute after a penalty corner resulted in a Mantione shot. Mantione's shot fired past the Hamilton goalie but was stopped by Morgan Clarke who was credited with the defensive save.
  • Hamilton would extend its lead at the 51:43 mark after a long pass from Alexis Glasofer sparked a counterattack from the Continentals. Felker would get on the end of the long pass and slot a shot past Jeremiah for her third goal of the game.
  • William Smith would strike back with under one minute left in regulation. Mantione took advantage of a defensive mistake and slotted a pass through to Gutch. Gutch tapped a shot past the Continental goalie to make it 4-1.
UP NEXT:

William Smith will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 27, when it hosts Messiah for a nonconference contest on McCooey Field. Action between the Herons and the Falcons is set for Noon with a brief ceremony celebrating the William Smith class of 2026 prior to kickoff.
