ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The William Smith soccer team was edged by Rochester Institute of Technology 3-2 in a Liberty League contest at Tiger Stadium this afternoon. With the loss, the Herons fall to 4-2-2 overall this season with a 0-1-0 mark in conference play.  
 
Senior Ruth Hotaling led the way for William Smith, recording three points on a goal and an assist. Junior Charlotte Brown had the other goal for William Smith. Junior Antonia Goerke played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves.
 
Elena Onodera had two goals in the win for the Tigers (5-0-3, 2-0-0). Emily Sanchez played all 90 minutes in goal and made four saves.
 
KEY STATS
  • RIT finished the game with a 14-12 advantage in shots. Both teams had six shots on goal.
  • William Smith had five corner kicks and the Tigers had one.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • William Smith opened the scoring on its first shot of the game. Brown collected a pass from first-year Addison Stockwin and buried a shot past Sanchez. Hotaling also had an assist on the tally.
  • Hotaling nearly gave the Herons a 2-0 lead in the 16th minute, but her shot was smothered by the RIT goalie.
  • In the 23rd minute, Goerke made a key save on a shot from Onodera, diving to her right to make the stop.
  • RIT flipped the game on its head, scoring three goals in a 10-minute span that sandwiched the halftime break.
  • Bella Coccio tied the game in the 42nd minute. She ripped a shot from the top of the 18-yard box past Goerke for her second goal of the season. Lindsay Ford had an assist on the tally.
  • Just under two minutes into the second half, Onodera scored on a looping shot from just inside the 18-yard box. Her third goal of the season was unassisted.
  • Four minutes later, Onodera scored on a penalty kick. It was her fourth goal of the year.
  • In the 57th minute, senior Julia Accioly had a golden scoring opportunity punched aside by Sanchez at the last second. On the ensuing corner kick, junior Miranda DeMura headed a shot just over the crossbar.
  • Hotaling made it a one-goal game in the 68th minute, burying a feed from sophomores Kelsey Otridge and Nell Dwyer.
  • Thirty seconds later, Accioly nearly tied the game, but her shot glanced off of the crossbar.
  • Dwyer had one last chance to tie the game for the Herons in the final 30 seconds of regulation, but her free kick sailed over the crossbar.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 27, when it begins a three-game homestand against Bard. The Liberty League contest is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
