Sailing places 2nd at NY Maritime Open

Garcia-Castrillon sixth at Carl Van Duyne

The Hobart and William Smith sailing team was back in action this weekend, Sept. 27-28, competing in three regattas. The weekend's action was highlighted by a second place finish in the NY Maritime Fall Open.
 
Four Hobart sailors competed for the Carl Van Duyne Trophy in Kings Point, New York. Senior Nico Garcia-Castrillon led the way for the Statesmen, finishing sixth. William Smith sailors were in Annapolis, Maryland, competing in the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship Round 1.
 
NY MARITIME OPEN
  • Teams arrived in Throggs Neck, New York, to an onshore postponement due to no wind. Boats got out on the water at 1 p.m., and five total races (3 A Division, 2 B Division) were contested on Saturday.
  • On Sunday, an additional two races were sailed in A Division and three races were completed in B Division in a 5-7 knot breeze.
  • HWS finished the weekend second with 36 points
  • Sophomore Simon Hammarlund and junior Bennett O'Keefe won B Division with 11 points. They crossed the line first in three races.
  • Sophomore James Kopack and senior Laura Therien were third in A Division with 25 points.
 
CARL VAN DUYNE TROPHY
  • After an onshore postponement in the morning, seven races were contested on Saturday in the MAISA Open Singlehanded Championships. One additional race was sailed on Sunday.
  • Garcia-Castrillon compiled 55 points on the weekend. He won the second and the sixth races.
  • Junior Jack Carter tied for ninth with 79 points. He was in the top 10 in four races.
  • Sophomore Dante Garcia and junior TJ Allison finished 15th and 17th, respectively.
  • Georgetown's Peter Barnard won the regatta with 21 points.
 
WOMEN'S ACC ROUND 1B
  • Sailors arrived to glassy conditions on the Severn River, postponing the start of racing until noon. In order to get any racing moved two miles away from the Naval Academy, where five races were contested in each division in a 4-6 knot northeasterly breeze.
  • Sunday, sailors arrived to similar conditions. A breeze filled in, and an additional four races were completed.
  • William Smith finished the weekend 14th with 206 points.
  • Sophomores Sabrina Starck and Olivia Wilkins were 13th in B Division with 95 points. They were in the top 10 four times.
  • Sophomore Deana Fedulova and junior Reilly Roedel were 14th in A Division with 111 points. They had three top-10 finishes.
 
UP NEXT
HWS will be back on the water next weekend, Oct. 4-5, when it heads to New Haven, Connecticut, for the Dinghy ACC Eliminations.
